Are you using R to look up the id of the "showfactsbutton?" I have no idea what this means.

I have no idea what this means. What is wrong with the code?

FunFactsActivity.java
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.TextView;

public class FunFactsActivity extends Activity {

    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_fun_facts);

        // Declare our View variables and assign them the Views from the layout file
        TextView factLabel = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.factTextView);
        Button showFactButton; findViewById(R.id.factTextView);
    }
}

Just on quick glance, the problem is you are saying:

Button showFactButton; findViewById(R.id.factTextView);

instead off

Button showFactButton = findViewById(R.id.factTextView);

You are saying ; after Button showFactButton instead of =

try changing that and see if it fixed the issue.
