Assigning a value to window.location effectively navigates the browser to the new location. It is the same as if you had typed the new location into the browser navigation bar. For more information and examples see window.location documentation .

The code window.location = $select.val(); takes the current value of the select, which is the value of the selected option. The value of the selected option holds the URL based on the href values in the menu.

Assigning this href to window.location is the same as navigating to the new href.
