At 5:57, the variables are passed out from HTML to the function/views ? Is that what you meant ?

At that point in the video, it is the view that is passing variables out to the HTML template. The variables being passed out is sometimes referred to as "context". The context passed to the template is where the template looks up template variables, that is, the ones wrapped in double braces {{ }}.
