Basic HTML and CSS project ideas?

So I've completed the web design and front went development tracks and i feel like a have a pretty good understanding of HTML and CSS. I don't really have and specific ideas id like to create so i'd like to practice my HTML and CSS by recreating some websites already out there.

Can any one recommend some websites out there i can try to recreate my on my own using very little to none javascript?

I feel like even though i have HTML and CSS down right now making a website i still kind of feel like i don't know where to start being on my own without following along with the instructors.

I wanted to put into practice what I was learning too too. I created an account on fiverr and and offered a simple website build. You get paid next to nothing, but you get experience working with clients and building bespoke websites from scratch. You have to work for a deadline and achieve customer satisfaction and the big plus is, hopefully you'll build something you're really proud of and can stick it straight in your portfolio.

Hi Ian, I didn't know fiverr at all. I've just visited the website, and I see some subjects like " I'll make responsive professional website in your budget " and on top of all image in the gallery I see a little badge with the mention *order $5". I'm a bit confused. Do they really charge 5$ for en entire website ? Or people on that website tend to use it as a way to promote their work and then ask you an higher amount of money when you really want to work with them ?

Because if they really charge 5$ at the end for an entire responsive website, if they are freelancers as some of them say. I don't know how they can make a living from their jobs... If they do that from time to time for associations, stuff like that, I can understand but othewise, no I don't...

If you could enlight me on this I'll be glad :)

Hi, Geoffrey. I can't seem to comment or your comment, but hopefully you're subscribed to this thread (which I'm sorry we're kind of hijacking OP). I did far more selling than I did buying on fiverr, but, from my experience, the simplistic answer to your question is 'Yes, all of the above'.

There are people that i'm sure will create a full, basic, functional website for $5. They tend to be people from certain countries in Asia where $5 isn't a bad pay for a few hours work. The quality of work is mixed and people comment that communication is sometimes difficult and extra money needed to be paid for modifications etc. There are also many, many people who do the old bait and switch. They'll advertise "a fully functional multi-page website", but you only get a landing page for $5 and you need to purchase extra 'gigs' to get anything close to what you want. Other misrepresentations include people who will make you something with photoshop and stick a few slices in it. Lot's of people who work solely with wordpress or wix.com. It's an entire spectrum of people and services.

Me personally, I made it very clear that I will make a fully functional, basic, bespoke, multi-page html/css website that will be ready for hosting. I also made it clear that I wasn't in it for the money and just wanted to practice my new skills and grow my portfolio. I excluded any kind of JS/JQ/Animation/wordpress etc etc. (mostly because I don't know how...yet). I set my delivery time right up to 20 days and worked on projects after work in my spare time. It was something that was a good fit for me at the time for the reasons I stated in my previous comment. Considering all the restrictions I put in place, I had an overwhelming response. So much so, I switched it off a month or so later. The project work was starting to pile up and get in the way of me studying here and that was counter-constructive. I would spend hours trying to solve a problem by looking at related stack-overflow articles, getting confused, eventually getting it fixed and then go back to Treehouse.....and the very next lesson was a far quicker and easier way to solve the issue I was having. Typical.

So there's my thoughts on it. I may activate it again at some point to get my hands into some real design work and to grow my portfolio, but for now I'm focused on learning new skills.

The other thing to keep in mind if you're considering doing this is something my Dad said to me. "Work for full price, or for free, but never for cheap." People will want the moon on a stick because they're "paying you"...but here in Norway a pint of beer costs $15, so....no...not really getting paid.

Hey Ian! thanks for the advice i decided i will try and do some stuff on fiverr. Quick question though, when building a website does the client provide any writing, logos and images they want on their website?

Thank you for you answer, finally your description is basically the idea I had. Thank you for your confirmation. I totally agree with what you father said, I personnaly prefere if necessary to work on some websites for my friends for free. But we don't all the time have friend who need a website. At the moment, I have to focus on my graduate thesis, so I have something to work on, a cool project. Nevertheless, registering on this website to provide your services and get trained is a good idea honestly. Good tip !

Everyone I dealt with had a logo and company colours already. Some but not all had images and copy, so for the ones that didn't, I just sent the project with lorem ipsum and stock images. They were more than happy with that.

Hi Ian, am to see you portifolio in that time you start at fiverr? I think is a great ideia to build an realistic portifolio. Be waiting!

Maybe you should check around you if someone needs a website, that could be cool to work on a website that's really going to be used later, and you'll have probably more motivation as well no ? Perhaps your personal/portfolio website ?

I'm making a static (CSS/HTML) website for my dad right now, specifically for one of his start-up companies. Reach out to your family/friends to see if they want you to create a website for them. Perhaps one of them has a job that they do on the side, such as a lawn-mowing gig or cleaning service, and would like a website to put their name out there; static websites would be a great way to market them.
