Here's how your number looks in translating from binary to decimal. The top row is the decimal equivalent, the bottom row is the number you provided.

128 ... 64 ... 32 ... 16 ... 8 ... 4 ... 2 ... u
 0  ...  0 ...  0  ... 0 ... 1 ... 1 ... 0 ... 0 

The right-most digit (least significant bit) are the units, next the 2s, 4s, 8s, etc. Your number represents a decimal 12. (8 + 4)
