Breaking into a web development career!

Hi all,

I'm desperate to break into the web development scene and build a successful career however I'm having no luck with even getting an interview! I would be grateful of any tips that might make me stand out from the crowd It would be great to hear stories of how people got their first job as a junior web developer or front end developer?

Thanks,

Shaun

I've heard a good portfolio is the main thing they look at. Do you have one? If so have you displayed some of skills you have learnt in actual projects/website/apps?

Thats not true.....I have over 30 projects on GitHub and I haven't been asked once to look at my portfolio. The only thing that matters is you passing the technical interview

Marcus is right. When it comes to this field you need something to show for yourself that showcases your coding abilities or design...or both. This doesn't have to be something you created for other people/companies. You can put personal projects up as well. I volunteered my services for free or did a work exchange to get a portfolio going. I also strongly recommend a Github account and some activity on there as well. Here in the bay area...many tech companies love a good Github account :) Contributing to Open Source is a good way to showcase yourself as well.
