index.html
<!doctype html>
<html>
  <head>
    <link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet">
  </head>
  <body>

    <p class="main-pg"> My amazing website</p>

The brackets come after the selector like this

.main-pg {
}
Em Har
Em Har

Anytime you are creating a css selector make sure to place it before the brackets. When creating a selector to grab a class it will always be with the "." and then it's class name. However, for future reference, creating a selector with an ID you will instead use the # sign instead. To answer your question, do this instead.

.main-pg {

}
