Can Maya LT Student Edition be used for non-profit indie games?

I would love to continue learning Maya LT from Treehouse, but eventually I'll be building games with Unity which gives me concerns about this license. I now for a fact that the license is for educational purposes and you cannot use it for commercial purposes, but what about free games? Can I export assets and create free games? I'm fine with paying the monthly fee if I get pretty good at using the software, but as of now I don't have the funds to do so.

Is a nice question. Is a free Student work not for commercial purpose but for showing your talent? But remember that you do not need the 800 or 1000usd to get Maya Lt. You can try 1Yr at much less. I think is around 250usd.

I personally don't know the answer to your question, but if you are worried about the licence, there is an alternative, a pretty solid alternative. This one is is called blender. It's a really powerful application, you can do pretty much anything you need with it. It even has some features that some applications seen as standard in the industry don't have.

I 'm not trying to force you to use it, but that's a good alternative, I worked on my side with 3dsmax & Maya when I was at high school and I then switched to blender since I was concerned by the price of the application and the trouble I could have by working without a licence.

Mostly everything you'll learn with Maya can be applied within Blender, they both have most of the time similar tools !!

Finally If you can't afford 250$ for an application you'll use as hobbyist, consider Blender as a way to exercise your 3D creativity, because that's totally FREE.

On the other hand, if you want to be hired later on in a company as 3D artist or Animator, It's great to have some experience under Maya or 3dsmax. Even if the skills you can acquire within Blender can be transposed to any kind of 3D application. Why ? Because Maya and 3dsmax are industry standards.

My answer is based on my little experience, because before learning web development and becoming front-end developer, I used to be 3D artist focusing on real time (games).

Edit: One last thing I noticed you can have a free Maya LT licence during 3 years as Treehouse student, check this post
