Can Node.js be used to create databases, tables and writing data in there or is still needed other server side language?

It's not clear to me if Node.js can be used as a stand alone method to operate with databases.

Yep, it can. For all intents and purposes Node is a server side language. Most common support for Node is the mongo database engine. But there are other packages for Node to work with MySQL or another flavor of db.
