I think you need to buy specific hardware and build the pc yourself, but it is possible. I'm not sure if it's cheaper. google "Hackintosh" and you should find something.

Here's a good place to start although the article may not be completely up to date. Something tells me the best option would be to buy a used mac that's a generation or two old. Good luck!

Yes you sure can install the apple os for your custom build computer, but pirated copies are the only options, you can't officially install that.

It is possible, but as said, getting a copy of OSX is going to be the hardest part. Most of the ways you'll find to do it are not legal, and so you have to decide if you're willing to do that. I do believe using a computer already running OSX, you can buy a legitimate copy of OSX from the App Store and install that on your custom build computer. I don't know if this is within the terms you agreed to with Apple, but I believe it's an option.

If you're not needing to develop an iOS app, you can install ubuntu for free which offers a nice development platform. You can even install ubuntu in a virutalbox on your windows computer, which is what I have set up.

Buying an older or refurbished mac is a good way to get into one, as long as you do your research on that particular computer.

There are also some web services that offer OSX in the cloud, albeit most options cost money, long run it is cheaper to not go this option.

I was talking with friend about it . Either way, Apple is overtaking Microsoft with thier producs and all basically? no matter what OSX will be a better choice in the long term run right?

Windows parts get defragmentated while i know that Apple producs are like u can even have an mac for 10 years and working good. While windows 3-5years max from my experience .

I mean, spending like 1.5k on 15inch iMac , would be the wise choose in many topics right?

WIndows and microsoft pcs are getting like off the road so i believe when bill gates will be like 130 years or less, windows wont exist as well .

Windows isn't going anywhere. The entire business world runs on Windows. If anything the Mac niche will dry up long before the Windows niche will.

Windows and Mac as far as OS's go are built for two completely different purposes, and it's not accurate to compare the two. It's like comparing a pick up truck and a minivan. Both will commute you around town, both will haul the kids, both will haul a sheet of plywood and some 2x4's for a weekend project. But one does one task better than the other, so which is best for you. You can't complain about a minivans ability to haul lumber not being on par with a truck, and you can't complain about a truck not being as accommodating to haul kids as a minivan.

Longevity of the two computers really isn't microsoft's fault. It's the fault of all of the 3rd party applications, who have software out there that people use, that does not do a good job managing computer resources, because they don't care.

Apple starting to open up to that as well, however they have a much tighter niche, and so they are tighter with fewer software options, and are not plagued by it so much.

With that said, I'v had my MBP for about 5 years now, and it's still doing okay. I don't see myself getting another 5 years though.

Spending 1.5K on a iMac, maybe. Apple has a horrible reputation for planned obsolesce. Meaning at somepoint your computer or device won't update to the next OSX update, while your software will move on. Eventually you'll be forced to buy a new computer or use very outdated software on an outdated OS, for no other reason than Apple said so.

I'd probably value a 1.5K iMac as worth it, but again that depends on someone's budget and planned use for the computer.

Windows will always be around. We won't have a global economy without windows computers existing. Ole' Bill Gates will stick around much longer than Stevie should our technology field drastically change.

I understand it a little bit more, i will take more note on what you said.

What I see now is that everyone is getting Macs, i mean, even colleges and schools are getting them slowely, every company or most of them including treehouse, uses Macs, developers at youtube that did tutorials 5 eyars ago updaitng to macs, all seem to go for Apple and living windows behind.

So as for a starter, like, me assuming id earn 300 pounds per webiste or ess, i have allready 300 pounds, so if i make enough websites to buy mac thats 1.5k that would be wise? i want 1.5k because its 15inch, and i dont want any smaller than that.

I will be dowing web dev atm, and soon go into Ruby on Rails, but i believe in a year or two id get into APPs as well. Now my plan is to get a WP job as part time and do some part time freelance as well. Then move into JS in deep and Rails and after Ruby or however that works.. and then into Apps, baiscaly in Obj-C and C# .

Anyways, developing on Mac is better than on windows from what i learned , as windows is not POSIX and its command and server are different . etc.. it was at treehouse in development tools .

So what windows is good at ?

I think microsoft has like 33% of internet stock or soemthing ? so that put them in a good position : p

You're right, developing in windows sucks. Which is why at my job, they wanted me to have a windows machine, when I asked for Mac. So I built a windows rig and stalled virtualbox, and than installed ubuntu, so when I dev, I dev in my ubuntu environment, which is posix and a much more pleasant experience, even though the computer has windows installed, it's ubuntu running on windows. It works nicely.

This more or less teaches you how to do it: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox

Your examples, treehouse, youtube...these are tech companies. They are the niche that caters to apple. You are the niche that caters to Apple. Me too. Most any tech company is going to have Apple computers. Most any and all colleges that have tech and design degree programs are going to have macs.

But this comparison is like saying pick up trucks are going to be the dominate vehicle choice, because I'm a contractor, and all my friends are contractors, and we all drive trucks, and so everyone is going to be driving a truck too soon. No, it's just the people in your world drive trucks. Just like the people in your tech circle use Macs.

But there is a lot of software not available for macs that many businesses use. Most people in professional jobs are comfortable in windows. Most all companies use windows as their main platform, They're not tech companies. They are doctor offices, auto mechanics, book keepers.

If you want a great environment to develop in, and you don't want to spend the money today, follow the steps in the link above to install unbuntu in a box on your computer. It won't cost you a thing, and you can probably have it done in 3-4 hours depending on how many problems you have.

Interesting . I get you more now.

Programmers , developers, designers or so , will use Mac as thier main platfor more likely because of the job they do right?

So a laptop that has windows, would be ok for doctors, librarians, older people etc.. because windows its just okay with it .

I wont mind spending money if i have to spend it good , and especially if im going to work on it and assuming it will last minimum 5 years+
Im okay with mac ( currently on my mum desktop mac), the only thing i do here is sit in the code anyways, i dont play games or whatever .

I had windows this summer for like around 3 months, i didn't really like it , most likely i hated it : p although windows as windows, is cool i must say it , i mean , i believe most people grew up with it anyways .

Im willing to pay 1.5k on it, as long as its worth is, id be sitting int the code anyways and do some maybe modeling and games like here with Nick , the C# course later on in a year two . I just dont mind spending it if its worht it , would you say to go for it?

I read as well that macs are more secure ? because of thier system and windows is more open, as well as there are ike 47 viruses on mac that is like very rare to get one whle windows has them millions. but i belive, if you install ubunton , it could solve it better?

Like i dont know, shoudl i spend the money today ? I really dont mind as long as im buying quality that will serve me for minimum 5 years + im 18 now going to uni in 2 years for 3-4 years , and by the time i go there, id should have very solid understanding working in apps and web . As well as my plan is to save in thsi two years for living, so when i go to uni , i wont have to work. So whatever i make now afer buying computer , id put it on the side , it would cost around 5k per year for food and house , and with the free time, id make more money? or develop my self if it will go good on the computer if you know what i mean . So while i have this 5k saved, and im still making money there on the internet, im gonna make my self for the next year , or either get a part time job there as well , depends on how it will go.

And if mac would be good, the default settings on the 1.5k 15inch mac would be good?

Both operating systems are great, period.

People who do not know to maintain their computer will always complain and blame the companies that actually built them their operating system.

I do agree Windows has more errors, but these errors 95% of the time are related to 3rd party applications and the incompatible hardware from the PC manufacturers, trust me I'm in the IT.

Don't waste your time and money on silly hackintosh, you will face way too many issues and will find yourself spending more time troubleshooting your PC than actually code the stuff you love.

If you want a UNIX environment for development go with Kevin's advice and install ubuntu.

By the way, I see wayyyyy too many people claim they cannot afford a Mac yet custom build their PC rigs for more than 2.5K, so it's not about money it's about personal choice, but it's much cooler to say "X company sucks and all their products suck".

1.5K for the MacBook Pro is fine, get the retina display one. It will serve you good as long as you serve it good!

Just do your own research and don't listen to people's opinions that much, fit it for your own needs.

Uh, I see I was wayyyy to biased on Apple side.

Im using 27icnh mac( my mum's , costed like 2.2k ?) for a year now, and i had no problems. I had some browser bug? or whatever it was, but it was easy, i just had to clean catche and it solved. Other than that, i had no problems with it and I like it of the way it functions .

Im going to have to learn more about what you and Kevin just told me. Its really interesting . I saw windows as falling behing and everything on it's negative side, i did even do some re-search about the parts and other stuff like that u spend more on windows repairs and stuff instead than mac. Or either mac pieces can run 15 years and still work good, while windows piecec would die 3-5years, which they did in my previous pcs but i cant compare any macs apartf form what i heared sicnce im using it only 1 year my self , apart that my mum friend had mac 5 years and thier saying it works just fine .

If you say so , i might go an have a look at it.
Id probably do another post before im going to buy it on what to get and see more information form other people as well.

Buying MacBook for 1.5k seem a wise choose then . Have looked at thier page, thats the cheapest one. In google i found for 1.3k though , i dont know, id have a look around my area as well.

When buying iMac, does it matter if id order it or go to the shop?

Unless you have prior experience with a Macbook Pro, I suggest you go to the local Apple store and play with it a little, see how it fits for you, since I know you have terrible eyesight like me, that's why I suggest to buy the retina display.

I personally use an iMac for the last 4 years, I have run into some issues and failure, but that's because I wasn't playing nice with Sudo commands in the terminal :P

Other than that I have yet to face an issue.

I use Windows and have only ever used Windows. I've never had problems because I know how to use it and maintain it properly.

I'm not anti-Apple. I have an iPhone and I think they have great products. I just prefer to use Windows computers.

Thank you!

:D I might go for Mac 15inch retina then .

Not against windows anymore.

I was a kid when i did use it and when i grew up 3 years later, it was too messed up xd But my older windows was 5 years old nd was ok. But it defregmantated its self.
