i cannot go past the first step of this challenge and i don't understand why this is my code
String firstExample = "hello";
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";
if (firstExample.equals("secondExample")){
console.printf("first is equal to second");

If you take the "" out of the brackets, your code is fine.
if (firstExample.equals("secondExample")){
The variable secondExample is a variable. You have treated it as a string by using "".
So, use:
if (firstExample.equals(secondExample)){
