1,866 PointsCan't decide, Front vs Back-End
Hello all!
As the title states, I am not sure if I would rather do Front-End or Back-End development. I have some experience in C++, C#, VB, and have so far learned a bit of CSS & HTML on this site.
I am more leaning towards Back-End just because I tend to think more analytically than creatively, but I am a person that likes to "be able to do everything" if needed. The only issue I think I would run into on Front-End, besides possible creativity, is my lack of Photoshop skills. Are those really needed if you're going to be a Web Developer?
Also, I have searched jobs in my area and there are very very few within 2 hours of me. And, of those few, there are maybe one or two junior positions. I think after finding this out I have gotten discouraged and slowed down on my learning progress. What happens if I spend all of this time and am unable to find a job? I have a fiance and a newborn baby to support, I can't really pick up and move locations.
I know this topic sort of got side-tracked, but I am just looking for some support or some type of inspiration to light the fire back up inside of me. It seems like all of these factors combined have smothered it.
Thank you! Matt.

8,443 PointsHi Matt,
I don't know if this will help you or not, but I found Mike Locke's blog very helpful with regard to deciding this type of thing. He's currently a Lead UX Designer at ADP in Los Angeles. Previous to that, he was a Lead UX Designer at CBS Interactive. He does weekly videos guiding newbie designers and developers with regard to getting into the business, which I have found very informative and inspirational. You can also contact him with questions. Here's a link to his video page so you can get a feel for who he is and what he offers, if you're interested:

1,866 PointsWow, how have I not heard of this guy. I watched a few videos now and he is very inspirational. I will definitely follow him, but I didn't see anything about choosing "which side" to program. I guess I will just continue to work on front-end until I get a grasp for it, and then work onto understanding back-end.

8,443 PointsMaybe you could email Mike? He might be able to help you directly. He did a video back in February called "Where to Start in Web Design?"
