Hi Suzanne

TextMate is one of many text editors you could use. See TextMate, Sublime Text, NotePad++, Coda there are also several others besides these. My personal preference is Sublime Text.

Which lesson are you referring to in particular?

Most lessons that work with existing code have a link to the right of the video (or directly below if you are on a small screen) called "Project Files" under the heading "Downloads". This will be a .zip file with relevant code examples that you can work with and modify yourself to experiment with what is being taught.

This video has some info about what a text editor is (the fist minute is talking about html/css before getting to the part about text editors).

Thank you for your response Tom! I am referring to the 2nd lesson in Introduction to programming. There are no links to project files that I can find The only downloads are other definition versions of the same video. Thank you for the tip for the video editors and the video. I really wish he had gone over this aspect in the video. i am really getting quite frustrated with Treehouse because of this kind of thing. I wish they wouldn't take to many things for granted. Almost ready to move away from Treehouse. Thanks for your time and your help

It doesn't look like that video has files to go with it though perhaps I can help get you on the right track...

"Introduction to Programming" is using Javascript to go over some simple examples of the underlying concepts used in many programming languages. Javascript is typically used for making websites more interactive so the examples are using some HTML and CSS. If it's not clicking you may want to work through (at least) the first two sections of Build a Simple Website (that would be Website Basics and Text Editors and HTML before continuing the Programming course.

As for making the most of Treehouse - what is your current goal with your studies?

There are several Tracks that aim to get you proficient in specific discipline. For most of these some knowledge of HMTL and CSS will be either extremely either useful or a necessity. I think all of the courses (excluding the business ones) require the use of a text editor and some knowledge of how files are organised on a computer.

If you are wanting to learn HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, Wordpress, Ruby on Rails, iOS, Android (i.e. how to make websites and apps) then I haven't found a better place than Treehouse. Stick with it and I'm sure after the initial hurdles you will start to learn at a great pace.

The teachers are very approachable and you can always send them a question directly on twitter if you are stuck. There's also a contact support button at the bottom right of every page - they have always come back to me within a few hours.

Don't be discouraged!

Tom Bedford - Now that's what I call a well thought out answer. Rock On :guitar:

James is right about that! This is a very well thought out and thorough answer. Thank you so much for your help. I am really wanting to learn objective C and xcode so I can program for iphone and ipad. I've been stuck on a problem now for the last 26 days (I even hired a tutor, but he couldn't get it and finally came up with an answer that didn't have anything to do with the videos so it didn't help me) and decided I'd better go back and take the introduction to programming. Getting blocked on THAT really added to my frustration. Honestly, I really don't want to learn another language and have actually gotten used to the xcode environment however, I was not even getting answers I could understand or that related to the content in the videos which I've been through several times looking for clues. I will try to the contact support because I really want the teacher to look at what I did and tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks again for your help and time. Suzanne

Suzanne Dawson - Have you checked out the new Objective-C Basics course. It's currently the beginning of the Learn to Build iPhone Apps track.
