Career path

Hi! I am not sure what I want to choose as a career in tech. There are a lot of options. I dont know if I like web development, mobile development, software development, cyber seciurity, information technology etc. Is there anyway to choose and can you send me a blueprint or something like that? Thank you!

Hi Arnold,

That's a very personal decision and the answer will vary for every person. One piece of advice is to find something you are interested in. If you did not get paid... which area would you naturally want to learn about and get really good at?

Or ask yourself this... what problems would you like to be able to solve?

Then pick the area you need to study / learn / get really good at so that you can work on solving those problems. Having said that, I would also look at where the needs are in the market. For example, I noticed that in Vancouver, new mobile developers had an easier time getting a job and got on average paid more than new web developers. Probably because it is a market that is newer, there are fewer people with the skills that are needed.

I hope that helps,

Mike

PS: Thanks to the awesome resources on Team Treehouse, I just launched my first app. :-)

Code! Learn how to program with Swift

Michael thanks for the answer. I like iOS development too and I am thinking about trying it, but I wanna be sure. One question did you learn everything for how to do that app? Nice app and great UI too, simple and clean. Great job :)

I learned a TON on Team Treehouse but also a lot by reading other sites online. Once you start building your own app you will encounter a ton of challenges that won't be answered on Team Treehouse so you have to start Googling and finding answers.

Ray Wenderlich has great tutorials and Stack Overflow are two other sites that I refer to a lot.

My one tip... change your language and stop using the word "try". Make a decision and don't give yourself the option of quitting. If you say "I will try" you give yourself the option of giving up / quitting when it gets too hard. It will get hard so if you decide and stick with your decision, then you will have the stamina to get through the hard parts... there will be plenty, but it will also be incredibly rewarding in the end. This last bit is not specific to programming by the way. ;)

I hope it helps,

Mike

Thanks Mike can you give me your email or your facebook? I would like to get in touch?
