6,071 PointsCareer program: contribute knowledge
Im probably being pessimistic but i feel like the contribution part of the career program is going to be the hardest for me to complete. I recently answered on of my own questions and the system gave me credit for it...but i dont want to make this a habit. would it be bad if i just answered my own question :/ (lol i know im not the only one thinking this)

6,071 PointsHuckleberry...yes i am talking about the mentoring program. Im still not exactly sure why its only in the west coast. i thought they were going to have meetups in the area but i havent heard of any. and im still not sure how to contact mentors. and they say they will start helping you look for employment once you completed a series of task. Contributing to the forum and getting your answers upvoted about 60 times is one of the requirements.

14,636 Points... wait... lol
1 answer with 60 upvotes or 60 answers upvoted/voted best answer in general? Two entirely different scenarios with two entirely different likelihoods hahaha
As to the "Only on the west coast thing" I dunno, I guess it's like anything with testing where you just take a small control group and do that before the larger implementation. At least that's how I understood it. I would assume that since they're located on in Portland and, as you said, there would be potential for meetups and personal interaction with mentors (if that's part of it) they wanted to keep it localized for now? I dunno, just throwing out assumptions lol.
But anyway, interesting to get at least some glimmer into some of the nuances of it so thanks for the post :)
Cheers,

6,071 Pointslol 60 answers with upvoted...you can also get 12 points for getting your answer voted "best answer"...

huckleberry
14,636 PointsOh ok, right right. Gotcha. That seems much more realistic. 5 best answers and you're golden.
thanks :)

10,950 PointsI'm in the same boat carine. 60 upvotes seems like it's too much just to complete that section of the career program which I'm also enrolled in . Fortunately, I live in the Portland, OR area, so maybe I should look into these meetups/mentors. I'll report back with my findings. Any Portland treehouse employees want to chime in?

carine todmia
6,071 PointsSounds good. most importantly i want to know if those meetup even exist lol

huckleberry
14,636 PointsWell, that depends. Is it 60 points for answers that are ONLY in the career program subforum (if there is one... I'm assuming there is) or is it 60 points accumulated for answers that are in any forum?
If the 1st scenario is true then yeah that seems like it might cause a problem seeing as how you're all vying for the same upvotes. But, if the 2nd is true that shouldn't be hard at all as it's seeing as how there are always tons of questions available and it's not that difficult to get the best answer vote if you're giving a well thought out and explanatory answer rather than just "you forgot semi-colon" lol
I'm curious which one of those two is the case though.
Cheers,

10,950 PointsSo far there isn't a career program subforum, Huck. I'm assuming the 60 points can be accumulated on any forum though.

huckleberry
14,636 PointsAh ok, that seems much more reasonable... and makes more sense.

12,662 PointsI appreciate that they are trying to get us working together to resolve our problems, but I agree that this is going to be a very difficult part of the career program. I've been avoiding the forums for weeks now. Perhaps we should look at it like a test, rather than forced social interaction. After all, a programming job isn't just about the coding, it's about how you converse and present your ideas. Maybe we should all make a pact to upvote each other to Best Answer so we can get this over with quickly?

huckleberry
14,636 PointsCan I ask in a completely 100% non-confrontational manner ... Why, if you're required to get those points, would you avoid the forums? lol
You have 6k points and a myriad of badges so you obviously have a good foundational knowledge base and I'm betting that you could nail down 60 points in "Best Answer" tallies in a matter of a day. There are a lot of newbie and intermediate questions out there regarding "why is this code not working? I can't pass the objective!" or just simply "Why is my code not working" that I'm sure you could nail down in a matter of minutes and give a detailed explanation in another 5-10min that would net Best Answer votes especially when a lot of other students out there are just giving one line answers that give the answer and don't explain it.
A Best Answer vote is typically for answers that, when there are multiple answers, is the most well thought out and clearly presented. It seems to me that the point you made near the end of your post is the precise thing they're looking for. For you, the Career Program students, to not only illustrate that you have the ability to understand a problem but to concisely, accurately and clearly express the problem as well as the solution since, as you said, the ability to communicate not just with your client(s) but with your team is vital. :)
Get thee to the forums, Jess! I have faith in you ;)
Cheers!

12,662 PointsWell I have two reasons, neither of which apply any longer, and thus the reason I'm finally here.
Reason number one was that I did not understand the value of the forums. I'm had some pretty nasty run-ins with other forums before where the people were not all nice, and it left an impression. As I've stated in my above post, I now understand the Why of the the forum challenge, and reading through some of the forum posts I've noticed that people on this site are a lot more professional. Even if they weren't though, I'd still be here because I realize I need to work on the communication portion and I am very eager to be here.
My second reason is very simple. I was SO excited about being able to learn that I didn't really care about the social aspects, and indeed I didn't even realize the forum challenge existed the first two weeks. I joined only two months ago, and I've powered through my first set of classes rather quickly because I couldn't seem to get enough. Now that I've finished the Front End Track I am a bit more prepared to concentrate on the other things. I short, I was just too excited to learn.
I'd like to thank you for both your post, and for the faith you have in me. You've made some really good points that have me excited to start helping in the forums, so thank you very much. ~Jessica.

3,216 PointsI've been trying to figure out how to meet this requirement as well, since the forum questions that are easy enough for me to answer have usually already been answered by the time I see them. But finally here's a thread I can add something to...
Regarding the meetups, they are organized on Meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com). I don't know how many there are now, but this blog post from last summer says there are groups in Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, New York, Portland and Orlando: https://teamtreehouse.com/forum/new-treehouse-meetup-locations
If you sign up on Meetup and join the group, you can get email announcements for upcoming events. I'm in Portland and haven't been to one yet but will probably go to the next one.
Carine, if there's not a Treehouse group in your area, you might find some other groups on Meetup.com that could be helpful - just search for "tech", "coding", your favorite programming language, etc.

carine todmia
6,071 Pointslewis...to your first point i feel the same way i tried to answer questions but someone already beat me to it. i probably just need more experience....
in regards to the meet up im in la so there are any treehouse ones out here which sucks cuz the tech scene is great out here. ive been to other meetups but there were all on ruby on rails and although i love rails right now i want to focus on perfecting my front end fundamentals like javascript and those type of meetups dont meet often enough ...

14,636 PointsI'm not sure what you're referring to. Is this part of the beta mentoring thing they have going on the west coast right now?
