5,614 PointsCertification for courses completed
I wish that treehouse would provide some sort of certifications for the courses we complete while being a member. Since, obviously I would close my account if I get to complete all the courses which I want to learn. So it would be really good if we get some sort of proof that we are proficient in the specified language.
Thanks

Treehouse TeacherHi Rohit,
The best certification — in my opinion — is designing / developing something really awesome using your skills, then releasing it for the world to see and use.
Making it open source helps, too :)

I agree with your point of view, but since I am still a student I thought that certifications might help because to complete my graduation I have to undergo certified training in at least one of these languages so if I had recieved some sort of certification from treehouse only then I wouldn't have to spend time and money doing the same thing again.
But I would certainly try to follow your lead. :)
Thanks

3,070 PointsI agree with both perspectives. It would be nice to have something permanent like a certificate, to show that yes we have gone through the courses. Also creating a live portfolio of work is invaluable.
Cheers,
Steve

Courses Plus Student 8,710 PointsIMHO it comes down to what employers expect, and what matters more: your skill set or your credentials? I've been fortunately throughout my life to have my skills & experience be the meaningful factor, but every employer is different.
Fortunately, the great thing about a field like web design & development, is most of the great innovators never finished college, so they don't see it as the requirement for success other places might.
That being said, there's a UGE difference in design vs. development. I found it frighteningly difficult to break into the video game industry (despite a B.S. in Game Design) because I lacked AAA title design experience. My fellow classmates, however, didn't struggle at all in finding employment because they were much stronger programmers.
The moral here: if you can code, you can code, but design is completely about aesthetics - there's not really a way to quantify it, so a piece of paper won't solve your problem.

3,895 PointsSir an employer gets to know of your skills throw your certification. People like Mark Zuckerberg are 1 in a million. Majority finds success by completing certifications and degrees and then getting a nice job. We cant expect everyone to be successful with their start-ups. Majority fail.

1,724 PointsHey Rohit,
I'm big on certifications, so I understand where you're coming from. However, I've got to also align with the responses you've got to this thread; your best certification is the amount of experience you've accumulated.
Unlike other fields, there's a lot of demand for software development/web development. Actually, if you were to take in the amount of people with degrees, the demand is roughly about 3 times that number. So getting fully certified is something that might give you an edge, but will pretty much give you the same chances of getting hired/contracted/commissioned as anybody else (pretty high) if you've got a solid portolio.
However, if you're still interested in getting certified. Enjoy:

22,249 PointsI would like teamtreehouse to be my college and not Riverside University or La sierra university after i'm done with high school :) A certificates from this site would be awesome and even leave room for me to either take other classes colleges can teach :) because lets face it .....colleges go over the basics to much and its at their pace and expensive:(

798 PointsLynda.com does certificates. I know... not as clear and nice as treehouse, but they do certs. I've posted many on LinkedIn. Pretty cool. Wished Treehouse did the same.

4,144 PointsIt would be awesome to have certificates from treehouse for the reasons other members mentioned above, I know that your creative portfolio is the best certificate .. but there's no harm from that having that feature right ?

Yonas Fesehatsion
Full Stack JavaScript Techdegree Student 7,950 PointsI would rather suggest more of a digital certification. More like a badge from treehouse that would be linked lets say to your portfolio site or something like that.

3,628 PointsAfter finishing my track, would it be alright if I link treehouse on Linkedin's certificates section?

Guil Hernandez
Treehouse TeacherYou absolutely can, atesyanik. :)

10,237 PointsHi Guil;
Like what @atesyanik and @Yonas Fesehatsion said about badges and having treehouse online badges be available even if our accounts expire makes sense? I also think we need certificates. The kind of material we are learning here is way better than most certifications in the market.
Having a certificate after a track/course completion is needed by most students looking for jobs.

atesyanik
3,628 PointsI totally agree!

6,258 PointsAlthough certification is trivial compared to actual skill and experience, there is another thing more valuable to employers than you imagine, that certification helps to highlight, and that is your eagerness and dedication to learn several languages, platforms, tools and frameworks. Certification from most online learning platforms doesn't accurately measure competency. However it's a great way to advertise to recruiters that these are the areas of specialization that you have some familiarity with at least and some interest in, and that you claim to understand. Recruiters can utilize that info in some attempt to evaluate you. The most attractive software developer employee is the hungry perpetual learner and problem solver.

2,712 PointsWhile telling my father about responsive design and why his small companies website might need to be upgraded to include it at some point in the near future, his response was simple. After you finish your training and HAVE A CERTIFICATE, come talk to me. So despite being some of the easiest to learn from classes I've ever experienced, I am assuming to have something on paper, I will have to audit another class that provides certificates, and then that school will have the actual CREDIT to the employer of actually providing me with that excellent set of skills (Not Treehouse). Just sayin'

Monty King
2,712 PointsWell, if Code Oregon is wanting us to be job ready, they maybe they have the funds to upgrade us?
Thanks for the information.

2,048 PointsExperience is great, but having a certification for completing an assessment for things like HTML and CSS are a good way to show employers that you know enough to pass an exam. I have projects on my LinkedIn profile that are WordPress websites, but if the job requires a solid understanding of HTML and CSS, the certifications would put you above the rest. It's also a good way to get the TeamTreeHouse name some free attention.
I definitely support certificates. Because TTH doesn't offer them, I'm spending money elsewhere with a company that does provide them.
