challenge 2 ios development: weather app

import Foundation let secondsSinceBirth = NSTimeInterval(1200000000) var dateOfBirth = NSDate(timeIntervalSince1970: secondsSinceBirth) let dateFormatter = NSDateFormatter() dateFormatter.dateOfBirth = .ShortStyle dateFormatter.dateOfBirth = .MediumStyle var stringDate = dateFormatter.stringFromDat(dateOfBirth)

why does this not work?

date_formatter.swift
import Foundation
let secondsSinceBirth = NSTimeInterval(1200000000)
var dateOfBirth = NSDate(timeIntervalSince1970: secondsSinceBirth)
let dateFormatter = NSDateFormatter()
dateFormatter.dateOfBirth = .ShortStyle
dateFormatter.dateOfBirth = .MediumStyle
var stringDate = dateFormatter.stringFromDat(dateOfBirth)

the task states: Use the date formatter object to create a string representation of the dateOfBirth. First, set the time style to be a short time style and the date to be of a medium style. Use the modified date formatter to create a string from the dateOfBirth date and store it in a variable named stringDate. Hint: Check out the Managing Formats and Styles under the NSDateFormatter class reference.

you did not set the style correctly. you used:

dateFormatter.dateOfBirth = .ShortStyle
dateFormatter.dateOfBirth = .MediumStyle

DateFormatter does not have a dateOfBirth property. that is the Date object you created.

the correct way is to set the dateStyle and timeStyle properties of the dateFormatter object:

dateFormatter.timeStyle = .ShortStyle
dateFormatter.dateStyle = .MediumStyle

then you call the stringFromDate function on the formatter and pass in the date object:

dateFormatter.timeStyle = .ShortStyle
dateFormatter.dateStyle = .MediumStyle
var stringDate = dateFormatter.stringFromDate(dateOfBirth)
