2,617 PointsCh-Ch-Ch-Changes! Changes to the Treehouse Navigation.
Howdy Treehousers! I am Matt Spiel, the Director of Design here at Treehouse. Wanted to give everyone an update to the app we just rolled out.
We updated the Navigation! Instead of our apps navigation being icon based and on the left side of the app, it’s now text based and at the top. All of the same navigation items are present and the nav should function exactly how it did prior.
Here's two GIF demos for you:
Why did we make this change?
We found that having the navigation on the side of the app made for a confusing experience. Especially when moving between our Marketing content and the Treehouse app. Additionally, for those students who use Treehouse on assisted devices, the code structure of the page made it difficult to access our content.
The new nav is clear, intuitive, and built on a much cleaner code structure. We feel confident it will improve the experience of using Treehouse for all of our students!
Our logic for grouping the navigation Items
You’ll notice we grouped the nav items into two sets. We wanted to present all of the top level items in a logical way. The main navigation aligned to the left and the secondary navigation aligned to the right.
The main navigation contains all of the content that Treehouse controls and provides to you, our students.
The secondary navigation are all the items that you the student use and control inside of Treehouse. Workspaces being an example of that. It is a tool that Treehouse provides, but you the student have control over. Your account & settings are also found in the secondary navigation and you can access those like you always have by clicking on your avatar.
We hope this type of organization makes navigating Treehouse easier and more intuitive for you.
Specific Changes for Techdegree Students
Techdegree Students will notice that the Graduation Cap icon is no longer present in the navigation to represent Techdegree Home. Instead of clicking on the Graduation Cap, you’ll now click on the Treehouse Icon. The url to access your Techdegree is now /home.
Specific Changes for Organization Owners
Organization Owners will notice that We shortened the navigation item from My Organizations to My Org. The url to access this page is still /organization.
We are always interested in hearing about ways we can improve Treehouse. If you have any feedback or run into any bugs or issues, please reach out to support!
Happy Learning!

36,073 PointsAwesome!

Steven Parker
242,770 PointsI miss the navigation icons.
I'd love to see this in the "Account Settings":
Navigation Bar Text
Icons (with tooltips)
What I miss even more is how the challenge questions used to "stick" to the top of the window as you scrolled down. Now, for many of the challenges, you cannot see the instructions and edit your answer at the same time.

2,139 PointsMight help with remembering

16,192 PointsI like it. The side bar was distracting, this is a much cleaner look.

2,732 PointsIt's great to heard the news for change, but i think the top navbar is a Making a high sound to mean that it so little little bit too wide normal sounds but it won't gonna cause not much problem from it, if you read and fix it, i appreciate it. Thanks!

Christopher Jr Riley
35,874 PointsThe changes are great. I liked the sidebar, though, and I'll miss it, but this is certainly an improvement!

Michał Gonciarz
13,549 PointsLiked the sidebar a lot more.

Courses Plus Student 21,100 PointsI just started reading "Don't make me think!" and this new navigation makes a huge improvement for usability. Now there is to "learn how to navigate the site/app", thanks so much :D

Aimee Ault
29,193 PointsJust a note on this: We made a small change to the location where Techdegree can be accessed. It's now available at /home . You can still click on the Treehouse icon to get there :)

Gabriel Vazquez
18,712 PointsI like the changes, thanks!

1,470 PointsIs this comin soon to the site? It looks cool on the app, so I'm just wondering.

michael miday
6,649 PointsI too miss the icon bar seemed way less cluttered that way

Justin McQueen
2,543 PointsI liked the colorful tiles on login better. The new interface seems drab, not the happy treehouse I'd expect.

mitchellsaa
7,741 PointsWhy is this information posted here if there is no longer an app? Second, will you be updating your information on what is new with Treehouse and its courses. It would be cool to explore Vue.js as a framework that is right on par with React and Angular. Third, it would be refreshing to have information that is solely dedicated to news and reinforces the core of the company in terms of how technologies evolve and are constantly needing specific updates. I hope this comment makes sense given that I just signed up for a the Techdegree.

Jonathan Grieve
Treehouse Moderator 91,254 PointsOne thing I'm delighted about is no longer having the personal issue of accidentally clicking the "support" icon each time I tried to pause/run a video on the video screen.
Other than that it;s great but is going to take a bit of getting used to. :D

Jeremiah Shore
31,168 PointsHaha, yes. Good to see I'm not the only one that did this often. Wasn't always the support icon, it was mostly the support hover text which would cover the play button.

Daniel Foster
7,840 PointsWow! No longer will I be bothered by the wasted whitespace that previously occupied the right side of the site on desktop. This new layout is beautiful.

Tadas Stasiulionis
8,621 PointsPlease review the height of a video on tutorials, it has reduced in size since the update, makes it hard to watch while not full screen, also review it while affected by the width of a browser.
Thanks, It has to be fixed,
Tadas

Matt Spiel
2,617 PointsTadas Stasiulionis can you provide me with a link to the page you are referring too? Also, what browser & operating system. We will look in to this!

Steven Parker
242,770 PointsMatt Spiel, I use current-version chrome, and the size reduction is evident on ANY video of EVERY course.
I've also submitted a bug report to support with some screenshots.

Matt Spiel
2,617 PointsSteven Parker got it. This is something we are actively working to fix. Appreciate your feedback!

Ryan Wilke
1,959 PointsWe just launched a small iteration which should help improve the issue you mentioned and should hopefully help by using as much of the available screen real estate as possible without cutting of the video controls.
Let us know if that helps!

Steven Parker
242,770 PointsRyan Wilke, the video size seems better. But the max-width
(for the controls and page text area) is still smaller than it used to be.
It looks like it's about 1200 now, it was about 1360 before.

Tim Arwine
5,406 PointsI second the motion. It HAS to be fixed. The new layout is clean, but makes the viewing screen TINY. The page? I think it will be the same on any class video, but if it helps, https://teamtreehouse.com/library/build-a-simple-android-app-2/improving-our-code/using-the-new-colors Browser: Chrome; OS: Windows 7. Thanks!

Ryan Wilke
1,959 PointsThanks for the feedback everyone, so it sounds like several of you might actually be talking about the max-width limitation on the video page. Does that sound about right? Would you mind sharing with us what your screen resolution is as well? It sounds like several of you might be working on some larger monitors or have fairly wide screens.
Thanks in advance!

Steven Parker
242,770 PointsI think 1920px is a fairly common width for modern desktop monitors. That's what I have.

abdul aziz
1,794 Pointsaaaah thanks treeHouse for this update, finely i don't have the side bar which occupy my video space.

dlpuxdzztg
8,243 PointsOh yeah, forgot to mention that i'm much more comfortable working like this. :D

Steven Parker
242,770 PointsExpanded "blue sky" version of my "Account Settings" suggestion:
Navigation Bar Text at Top
Icons at Top (with tooltips)
Icons at Side (with tooltips)
Clearly, some folks have a strong preference for one placement or the other. And while the new placement is ideal on portrait orientations like mobile displays, it actually reduces the available screen area on landscape displays. This is even more noticeable now that the maximum width of the content area has also been reduced.
As an alternative to adding a new account setting, you could potentially switch navbar placement and orientation based on window width. When the window width meets or exceeds the total of the max content width plus the sidebar width, use the sidebar — otherwise used the top navbar. This would give the user the ability to choose just by adjusting their window.

Sebastian Nitu
8,616 PointsHi, Matt Spiel !
I have a question:
When recaping Treehouse videos, why are those not taken into consideration for the "Momentum" metric at the end of the video? It doesn't make sense not to!

Jonathan Grieve
Treehouse Moderator 91,254 PointsWhat the metric graph does is record the 1pt per new video you watch, or the first time you pass a quiz or challenge. It's about momentum of the new things that you learn.
That's my interpretation of the graph anyway. :-)

Kyle Meyer
5,459 PointsHey Sebastian Nitu —
We've definitely heard that feedback before and will consider changing it. For now, the momentum graph shows your new learning progress as a way of judging your incremental progress forward through content.
Do you find yourself rewatching videos often? What do you think is the most common reason you do so?

Witoon Gunta
18,377 PointsWow excellent!

Sebastian Nitu
8,616 PointsJonathan Grieve I can totally see your point of view and it does make sense!
The thing is that it feels weird when you rewatch a few classes and the momentum graph doesn't move!
As a user it's something like "Doing a recap doesn't mean I am in the momentum / flow". Basically I am still doing the thing I wanted to do -> study <- just in a different way ->recaping <- but I am still there aren't I?

Sebastian Nitu
8,616 PointsHi Kyle Meyer !
I find myself rewatching videos quite often, especially after I've been away from learning for a while! It seems to me that it's a good approach to getting things to sink in...

11,278 PointsI love it!

Jason Anders
Treehouse Moderator 145,862 PointsLooks great, but in the challenges... when you're scrolling down to type the code, the instruction now scroll off screen. Prior, the instructions would shrink, but lock in place so you can still see them while doing the code. It's makes it a bit more challenging now.
Also, I agree with Dimitrius... The nav bar could be a bit smaller.

Matt Spiel
2,617 PointsJason Anders thanks for pointing this out. This was something we wrestled with for a bit, and as you pointed out we still haven't found a good solution yet. One of the edge cases we encountered (and what led us to change this particular feature) was that for Code Challenges with longer instructions, the entire coding area would be covered. Clearly there is still room for improvement.

Kyle Vassella
9,033 PointsIt's nice to see you're constantly looking to improve. I had thought about emailing you guys because the icons looked rather similar to eachother at first glance - every time I wanted to navigate somewhere it took me a split second longer than it should to know where I wanted to click. Not a huge issue, but I think this is definitely an improvement. Plus it adds a bit of screen real estate when watching videos of a certain size. Nice job guyz
I do miss the graduation cap bc it made me feel intelligent and studious, and better than everyone else who does not have a graduation cap, but whatever.

Prince Sargbah
2,551 PointsThis new layout suck. Speaking of UX, I think it would be great to give users the opportunity to switch between layouts. I prefer the previous layout much better. That was much educational learning structure. Menu on the top of the page to me feels more corporate structure. I'm disappointed.

24,604 PointsExcellent.

Darrell Conklin
Python Development Techdegree Student 22,377 PointsI like how everything is centered and 1260 is a nice width looks really clean, kudos!
PS I happen to like the size of the nav bar and the font size of the links easy on the eyes and quick to read.
PPS I also like how it matches my Mozilla Firefox Developers Edition Theme

Ricky Kharawala
12,148 PointsWay better! The traditional style navigation bar is much easier to use for me! Really appreciate the redesign and also the ios app!

Jonathan Healy
21,601 PointsHave to agree with everyone asking for options between the two layouts. The prev. layout allowed us with wider screens to have the teachers notes and a larger video player all in view without having to scroll around, especially as the nav bar was hardly used when simply going through a few lessons for the day. Regardless, keep up the good work!

Donald Cox
2,088 PointsAW D: I really liked the icons on the side. Any chance you could add an option in the future to use either one? :D

Wenzel Massag
3,663 PointsI actually liked the sidebar better. It's less wasteful on widescreen displays, considering height is already a scarce resource on wide displays like all notebook displays.

Konrad Pilch
2,435 PointsNah, i hate it. It's good, but i preffer the older one. At least give us the source code , the CSS so i can attach it , like it was in the old days xd.
Mmmh, i don't know, let's see if im going to adapt in few weeks to this.

8,958 PointsI like new design!) But the video screen is smaller and sometimes there are problems with site elements when scrolling down. When I want to see teachers notes I scroll down and i

3,201 PointsGreat work, Matt! :) I am finding navigation and UX much more intuitive.

idriss Elouilani
42 PointsI want take courses to prepare me to become java script programmer. what is my first step I need to take html and css or just html. I am newbie in this field.

Kyle Meyer
5,459 PointsHey idriss Elouilani!
It looks like you are on the Front End Web Development track already! That's a great place to start. Realistically, becoming a javascript programmer requires understanding HTML, CSS, as well as Javascript and many internet fundamentals. If you find that too difficult at first, check out the Digital Literacy track, which covers computer and internet basics.
Good luck to you and your learning! It'll take consistent practice and a steady routine to reach your goals—it may not be easy, but it'll be worth it!

Jason Hess
4,789 PointsIs anyone else having problems with their "workspaces" not loading? I keep trying and get an error message saying "Not Authorized". I only have 12/100 workspaces so I know I'm not at my limit. And it takes forever for them to load up as well. The changes to the nav are great but that does nothing for me if I can't load a workspace to write code in. Guess I'll fire up Sublime Text and just wing it. I've been a member since "Day 1" and seen this site grow exponentially. But what good is a bad UX if the UI doesn't work as planned? Any suggestions would be great. Until it's fixed, I'll just stick with Sublime.

Kyle Vassella
9,033 PointsYeah there are a bunch of people talking about this. I've seen customer support describe it as a bug on the back end that they've been working to fix, which has been acting up pretty rampantly lately. They say to refresh the page a couple of times, but that didn't work for me.
What works for me every time is to fork the workspace. That makes a new workspace load up with all of your old code and the new workspace does not have this problem. It creates a duplicate but if you really need to access your workspace then and there, it does the job.

Jason Anders
Treehouse Moderator 145,862 PointsI've seen many posts about this in the forum, and I'm not sure why it hasn't been resolved. This actually has been an issue for a while according to the posts.
Personally, I don't use Workspaces at all. I came to the conclusion that "Workspaces" don't exist in the 'real-world', so I've always done local development with the course. I believe this will lead to a better learning and working experience. So, I agree, stick with Sublime (Or Atom as I use... I used to use Sublime, until I discovered Atom).
:)

Denise Edwards
4,924 PointsI really like that you guys turned this into a learning opportunity! I want to be a user experience designer, and right now in my studies, I'm very interested the philosophy part of design: why certain sites or apps choose to design their products in a certain way. So, when I saw the change I was immediately, like "Why?" Thanks so much for writing a post and explaining your decision. It's really obvious that teaching is at the heart of everything you do, even making a change to your UI :)

4,939 PointsI'm not sure if this is just an issue in Safari( I know I should check cross-browser compatibility... or maybe you guys should...), but after completing any video the page scrolls back to the top, and I always have to scroll down to click "Continue".
A slight annoyance, but maybe you can just move the Continue button to the top or add an auto-continue feature.

3,009 PointsI know I am really late to the table here. I haven't been active on treehouse for sometime now and have just seen the re-design and read this post about it. I must say, I enjoyed reading about it. As a solo free-lancer, I appreciate how much effort y'all have put into discussing your changes openly with your users. It's nice to have an informative dialogue as to how a design team comes to these types of major decisions. It feels very open-source in nature. Thanks!
