I added an id to the ul called "links" and used it to write this:
$("links a").append("target='_blank'");
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen" title="no title" charset="utf-8">
<title>Links Page</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Links</h1>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://google.com" class="external">Google</a></li>
<li><a href="http://yahoo.com" class="external">Yahoo</a></li>
</ul>
<script src="//code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.0.min.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
<script src="js/app.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
</body>

231,269 PointsYou may be using the wrong function.
"Append" is used for adding new content to the document. You probably want the function that will add an attribute to an existing element (or set of elements).
Hint: It also starts with "a".

2,660 PointsSo if I write: $(".external a").attr("target", "_blank"); I'm still getting an error " Bummer! I was expecting target
to be _blank
not ``"

2,660 PointsDo I have to add the "target" attribute somehow? Doesn't seem like it should be this difficult? Thanks btw!

2,660 PointsI figured it out thanks. Overthinking it I believe: $("a.external").attr('target','_blank');
