Color won't change in real time as i move sliders on the phong shader applied to side panels

After apply a new phong shader to the side panels, nothing changes on the object preview as I modify the color parameters (or any other parameter). The only way I can get the changes to show is by applying the original phong shader back to the panels, then re-applying the one I created. Only then are the changes I have made reflected. And still not in real time
