I have read that concatenation only works with strings, but I am able to do this..

let someNumber = 124
var firstValue = someNumber + language

You would be correct, however. What you have above is using Maths (addition) therefore what you've read is correct as your adding the values 12 and 124 together. If you had a string an a number you would need to use string interpolation as the compiler can't append a value if it's type is Int for example.
// Good
var total = 12 + 124
// Bad
var total = "Number: " + 12
// Good
var total = "Number: \(12)"
