...for example by using .attr to access it by name ('value') rather than .val? I've always thought of it as such (as an attribute).

6,936 PointsYes you can but there shouldn't be any reason to do so. Using .val, you'll end up with shorter and cleaner code.
Here's an example showing that it works with .attr
