You are using 1.4.0 version of spring boot gradle plugin,

I will ask him in Java Techdegree Slack about about the 1.4.0 problems. Today is Sunday. So probably only tommorow he can answer. I will try in meanwhile find the answer myself. They changed a lot in Spring 1.4 plugin. Here is the documentation about Validators in Spring Rest:

Thanks for bringing this up. Looks like when moving to a newer version of the Spring dependencies an error was introduced. I have a workaround that I will add to the teacher's notes.
Add the annotation @Lazy to the @Autowired Validator like so:
// ...
@Autowired
@Lazy
private Validator validator;
// ...
Basically the ordering of things matter and there is a conflict, that will probably eventually be resolved, but we don't need this until a request is made, so this does the trick to allow the server to boot up and then wire up the configuration.
