messy = [5, 2, 8, 1, 3]
del messy[2] # remove the number 8 with its index value, which is 2
del messy[1] # remove the number 2 with its index value, which is 1

the number inside the "[]" is the index, not the value. So since 2 is at index 1, that's what you would put in the bracket. Also get rid of the space between the variable and bracket
