REPL stands for Read-Evaluate-Print-Loop. REPLs are used so you can test short commands in a language and see the results without having to write a whole program.

JSHELL is a REPL that comes with newer versions of Java. I'm guessing the java-repl that Craig used is a REPL created by treehouse to use in the java workspaces.
