Different prices for different TLDs.

I'm seeing different prices based on different TLDs.

.club is $7.88 per year for example.

.io happens to be $32.88 per year.

What makes these prices so different I wonder?

Basically, the registry operator sets pricing for TLD's it manages. Registrars act as a reseller of sorts, so the price you're seeing is an adjustment of the registrar's cost.

In short, the price you're seeing is the the registry's price + what the registrar expects to gain as profit for the registration.

For example, Verisign (the registry for .COM) sets a registrar price of about 6-8 dollars. Most registrars will in turn charge you around 10 dollars, meaning that they make a couple bucks for each .COM you register.

As a standard rule, cc(country code) TLD's (such as .IO, the country code for British Indian Ocean) have a higher price tag.

Most gTLD's (with the exception of new gTLD's) are considerably cheaper than ccTLD's.
