Thank Jonathan Grieve!

Yup, the hacker courses = Treehouse Club, one of each probably isn't enough and working with existing code is such a nice way to get started.

If you haven't checked out Sonic Pi yet or this video of Andrew Sorensen doing a similar program live they are well worth your time. One of the best parts about Sonic Pi is the low barrier of entry in terms of set up. It also has multiple applications from a little song to show understanding for a classroom assignment, to a custom drum machine for your drum-less band. It's truly revolutionary and should be incorporated into every classroom IMO.

For now, would I be right in surmising that Sonic Pi is a programming language for writing digital music with code? If so that's a really exciting concept. :-)

Your surmising is correct ;) and yes, it's the coolest! Feel free to up vote that course on the Trello board :)

Just looked at Sonic Pi. That is really cool. I need to bring that up with the music and programming at my kids schools. Just need for them to realize the potential and figure out a way to incorporate it into the latest curriculum.

The next question that came to my mind after I logged out was can I compose something tangible... something simple to begin with like "Mary Had a little lamb" and then braver or is this is collection of synths and Midi as an accompaniment.

When I was at University in Middlesbrough I got involved with a lot of Digital Music production as part of my Web design course. We used the industry standard Pro Tools LE to make music which was enough fun in itself. I'd love to think we could make similar things with Sonic Pi :)

*Edit: * Downloaded Sonic Pi this morning and tried to have a quick go, sadly it didn't work. :( Will try again later though, I want to try to get into this but there's no rush :)

sorry Jonathan Grieve that it's not working for you. My set up for OS X was as simple as download, drag to app folder, open. Stack overflow might be a good place to start trouble shooting, I saw there was a common error with a sound configuration, I didn't look too much into it, but it might help - obviously let me know if there is anything I can do.

As for what you can make with it, yes, I recently copy and pasted the code for Frozen's let it go and it works great! I think the sky is the limit on this one :)

Hi Joy,

No worries I'm not put off. :) I'm sure your course will follow the setup for iOS too but that's okay

I've just been busy so I haven't had a chance to look at it further but I'll definitely be on to it. I'm looking forward to the course though so one way or the other I'll get there :-)

Hi Joy Kesten

I had a second go at working Sonic Pi just now and sadly I've still got no luck. The memory process sonic-pi.exe is stuck on about 13,752kb and scsynth.exe on 11,396kb.

Any idea what the system requirements are for Windows? I'm beginning to think my medium level Windows 7 system just can't handle it.

Many thanks :)

Jonathan Grieve sorry about that. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling again. Obvi use this link: http://sonic-pi.net/#windows and let me know if that works for you.... also you might want to try searching the error you're getting on stack overflow, I tried searching what you sent me, but nothing good came up. Sorry it's not working out easily for you, good warning for if I make a course on it

Good idea :) I'll get onto stack overflow and report back. There's no real error message to report on though. In fact I've no really got beyond the home screen since I first downloaded it (this is my second install attempt)

But I'm not defeated yet I'll get onto stack overflow as you suggested first time and see what they say.

HI, i was wondering about the hacker courses? i think you mentioned above? i didnt understood it : p what are they exactly? HTML hacker? CSS, JS, Game hacker? it sounds strange but interesting , just want to make sure where to put up vote :)

Joy Kesten

Konrad Pilch sorry for the confusion, they are the same as the club courses. It just meant that the code works already and you edit it during the course, instead of writing the code during the course.

Thanks for asking for clarification!

Hi Joy Kesten , could i ask you how long does it take to make a series of video?

I had an idea about something, but i dont know what you think or others, if when you make a vdeo , and you have e.g Course 1: Topic1:JS Basics, Topic2:JS Objects, etc.. could you release the first topic when its done instead of waiting for all the topics left?

This is great, thanks for posting this up. :-)

The "hacker" group of courses catches my eye immediately. Is this a follow up I wonder to the "Treehouse Club" courses and kind of a "theory" guide to how CSS, HTML and JavaScript work?

And what's this Sonic Pi, I'm very interested about this, I've never crossed paths with that before.

I can't think of anything to request at this stage, probably because it's getting late in the land of England but I'll be sure to check back when I do. :)

Joy;

Don't see a way to vote on cards in the Digital Literacy board. Have you enabled voting in Power-Ups on the board?

Ken

Ken Alger - I did... it says "Joy Kesten enabled the voting power-up." on the activity feed but maybe I didn't do it right. I'll work on it. Sorry about that :(

Hmmm... I see that as well, but no option to do so. What about the permissions for voting?

Hi everyone!

I was always interested to know how the back of everything works. Like how did people make programming languages? how did the computer work? electrons ? what about robots? hacking ? all the protocolls that are used in software and web and whatever is related to it. And i woke up at like 13:00(1pm) in day so my brain inst fresh : p

Well, stuff that we would learn if we would go to colleges/universities maybe too ? We all know that treehouse teaches better then colleges, at least where i live. People using AP Div tags to post random DIVS with all kind of colours on the websites and just everything bad. I can post a screenshot about it. Teachers cant teach , rarely there are good people that knows how to teach and knows about the subject. Universities, are different i believe.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will add your ideas to the content road map. Please feel free to vote on anything you're interested in learning.

Hi Joy again, I was just thinking, if you could pop up the voting in their notifications for everyone . It seem like not many people know about it : p I did make another post and it seem from last night quite a lot of votes went up, if that for the reason or not . But maybe if everyone would get this in their notification more people will be engaged. I had this in my mind.

EDIT : Or maybe if there would be some different page here at treehouse maybe for " TreeHouse Development" Where people can make topic and discuss stuff , and if something catches the eye , or a lot of people agree, put it forward to lovely staff .

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll run it by some folks at Treehouse and see what they think. Thanks for the post too!

How about a course on " How programming Language are made" in the Digital literacy category

Hi Joy again xd

I had a problem few from the last day. I dont know if this fits here, in digital literacy, but i was thinking about ' Health & Safety ' course. I mean , how to sit on the computer, eyes etc..

Recently, just like now, i had problem with my eye :( if your interested heres the post .

And since were in a developer word, where we use a lot of pc, it can be very bad for health : p

Would be there an option to make a video about it ?

  • Konrad :)

Sorry to hear about your eyes Konrad :(

I think an ergonomics and computer use best practices video is a great idea! I'll add it to the digital literacy trello board

Well, definitely my fault :(

That would be great! Thank you :)

EDIT: Oh , btw, how will you choose what to do next? will you choose one with the more votes?

I really would like a "Basic Linux(Ubuntu) Server set-up" course. That should include installing everything you need to do the Ruby on Rails track and PHP track directly on the server. And it absolutely must include how to access the server from your "normal" computer (from windows please), so you can do everything remotely while the server is in your server room / closet or wherever people like to put them :)

Is that possible to put up for a vote? :)
