Do I need to pay for a developer account upfront in order to take either of the iOS development tracks?

I just started section 2 of course 2 ("Build a Simple iPhone App with Objective-C) in the iOS Obj-C Development track. I cannot find a way to follow the course step-by-step without enrolling in the iOS developer programme. Any help or tip is much appreciated.

I just finished the "Build a simple iPhone App with Objective-C" and "Build a Playlist Browser with Objective-C" and I did not need to pay for a developer account. The only time you would need the developer account is if you wanted to test your app on a real iPhone or deploy your app to iTunes. As long as you have a Mac to download XCode, then you should be good to go. Was there anything specific that was asking for your developer account?

Thanks Samy. I have now identified the source of the issue. I was charging my phone off my computer when doing the assignment and Xcode by default was trying to test the code on my iPhone and hence asking for a developers account. Many thanks again for pointing it out.
