General Discussion

Do you ever

feel like a loser when, it seems that the more you learn, the more acutely clear it becomes how much there is you don't know?

All the time :)

But the lie we've been told is not knowing stuff is some how detrimental, we call ourselves names and feel bad. The truth is, is that no-one knows everything. It's impossible to do so. We can feel inadequate but that can be channeled into overcoming our short fallings. The most important thing to learn is how to learn. The ability to be agile, the ability to change, the ability to adapt to our environment.

If you stick at it, get more experiences, your confidence will increase but still have more to learn. We're all in the same boat :)

Makes sense!

Katrina,

This is the story of my life.. lol. You are not alone.

I felt this way specially when I started grad school. I was super overwhelmed because people I talked to seem to know everything in the field. Over time I realize that I don't need to know everything down to the most intimate details. "Broad exposure, narrow expertise." If we spend most of our time absorbing material rather than applying what we know, we'll never get anything done. I think right now with web development I'm at the stage where I expose myself to as many things as I can to see the landscape. Once I decide on a language/platform and start building things, the learning process will become more streamlined in the sense that I just have to learn to do the next thing I need to do.

Wise words!

Wow! great information guys

Makes me feel better that I am not the only one who feels this way. :)

I don't think knowing everything or even knowing a lot to the point you can recall it at the drop of a hat and type code from memory all the time.

What I think is more important is knowing what code can do and knowing what it is you need to look up to find said code. It takes no time, increases your knowledge a little and means you aren't panicking about not knowing every rule of a language. A day doesn't go by without me looking something up.I have browser windows always open researching things.

I had a design professor tell me a great designer knows what he/she doesn't know.

There will always be something to learn. But yes, I often feel in the same boat as you.

Interesting, thanks!

I have a small plaque in my kitchen to remind me of this everyday: http://i.imgur.com/TvukLSe.jpg

Nice!

You need to find the mindset of "The more I learn today the smarter I am than yesterday." This has helped me through some slumps.

Sound advice!

Learn. Unlearn. Adapt. Never stop learning. And keep moving forward.

You're a winner!

Thanks!!
