Do you learn multiple technologies at once?

I get bored of learning the same technology all day.

Is it worth it to use my time on learning different technologies at the same time? Focus on one for a few hours and when I get bored, focus on learning another?

Hi Jesus,

I tend to do that all the time I split my day learning different technologies (JavaScript, Java, CSS and Ruby). I find that it gives my mind time to understand the content that I learned, have a chance to put it into practice without causing my mind to feel burned out from constantly learning the same subject. I also feel more motivate to learn when I combine different concepts I learned to improve my design or program.

Yeah I want to do that too but I don't know if its the best method to learn

There's another question I tackle day after day. At the moment I have courses in progress with Databases, SQL, PHP and JavaScript. I have plenty of fresh content to get through on PHP but my track at the moment is currently in Java before eventually moving on to try and learn Android.

It's a fine balance for me to focusing on new stuff, trying to let what I have learned sink in and make sure I'm not stagnating. To be fair though if you're following a curriculum it can be best to keep it varied if you're not motivated by learning and maybe struggling with the same things.

I made my own curriculum and I'm going thru it but I added a few courses and books about the same topic and I'm already bored of it but I want to learn everything

There are lots of courses i want to get into now, I agree it's hard when you want to get into everything at once :)

Hi Jesus

I feel your struggle - I had the same problem. What worked well for me so far is that I try to focus on a goal (a specific project) and the technologies I want to use. In my case it is the MEAN stack. Whenever I get bored or burnt-out, I try to do something else. This might be something trivial as talking a walk or reading about non-related stuff to regain focus. Sometimes, I just make a short excursion to other related stuff (but I try to avoid that, since I want to reach my goal first), such as setting up a Linux web server with a more ore less usable configuration (for productive usage).

Maybe just try to just juggle between things for a little while or just turn your head off - it helps a lot in my case. :)

Yeah thats what I'm gonna do. I'm currently learning ES6 and since I feel I already have JavaScript knowledge I'm not that motivated and after 1 hour I already get bored. I'm gonna switch my focus to React whenever I get bored of ES6.

Or you can try to apply the Pomodoro Technique. This might help to get you more motivated and less tired in your ES6 learning session. And yes, JS can be tiring a lot of times...

I just started to use this technique (~2 week)... So don't have my word for it, but I feel a slight difference regarding my mindset when approaching new things. I tend to be more motivated, since I can learn in smaller portion and give my brain some time to breath.

Do you know any pomodoro clock that works on window 10 by any chance? With notifications and stuff?

No sorry, but there should be a widget for sure. I actually use the timer of my phone, which serves the purpose very well too. But you can also write your own Pomodoro clock with JavaScript ;)

I just set it to 30min, so I have a little margin to get a little overboard if things should take longer... and then I take a quick break. After the fourth or fifth Pomodoro cycle I usually take a longer break for 20min-30min.

Cool thanks, I'll check it out!

Hi there Jesus

I had this issues before, the pitfall when I rely on motivation and psychological emotion too much. I could sink. and this is how I beat it mostly all the time: I focus on learning two things, but not in the same mode. First thing has the high priority, which is my goal. Second thing has the low priority, which is something that me, my ego, my mind and my soul will enjoy learning it :).

What I mean by not in the same mode: when I motivated & enthusiastic --> I focus on the first thing. when I in low mode (bored, burnt-out, not motivated, etc..) --> I focus on the second thing.

the jewel here is: the second thing! must choose some material that you love, entertained by it, delightful, to refill the mind power. It could be something enjoyable like learning playing piano, new language, reading etc... or it could be another goal!

My strategy is to create an endless circle, that charge my mind power & mood. focusing in benefit the first goal.

I recommend to you this book: A Mind For Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science don't worry it's not about math, just the title :). It help me a lot understanding how to learn!. also there is a free course online called: Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects. hope this help all of you too.

Hey Mohammad,

Thanks for your detailed answer and for the great advice. I'll definetely check the book and try what you just told me.

Cheers!
