Domain and Hosting Services

Hi, I am working through the word press developer learning adventure and pointing the domain to the host. I am just wondering why it is recommend to have a separate service for each rather then one that does both and eliminates this step?

I haven't actually watched that video but it is best to go for a company that specializes in one area. For example, there are a number of great domain registrars but there hosting leaves a lot to be desired.

A great example of this is that you wouldn't choose a plumber who is also an electrician and tiler. They can't have equal competence in all these skills.

Hi Emily, just wanna share my experience with wordpress.

I think for the very reason of having more control over your website. there are a lot of limitations on having your site hosted by sites like wordpress.com. a couple of them are. 1.) you won't be able to use your own templates and you won't be able to modify the files as well. 2.) also, you won't be able to use plugins other than the ones they provide.

basically, you can't do much as a developer to improve your site. all they give you are upgrades to premium themes, plugins and other addon services.

hope this helps. :)

For WordPress hosting, I love WP Engine.

Thank you everyone. So it is generally advised to use a separate host and domain service. I just needed to know that it was worth the head ache of doing the pointing since it can be eliminated. Thanks again!

you're welcome Emily, I guarantee it'll be worth it.

in my opinion, it's always a good thing to know how something works. =)

The biggest reason I've found in the past is when it comes to move hosts(they may not always be the best for you or quality will drop off). It can sometimes be a pain to get the domain from the host (especially if you take advantage of the free domain on the packages since the domain is registered in their name).

I think that most people try a few hosting companies over the long-term life of their site. So, you will probably need to know how to do that. Many people don't want one company to have so much control over their site. Spread the risk around a bit, ya know.

Thanks again everyone, April the concept of them having so much power over your site it solid one. I appreciate all the feedback. I just could not get on board with doing it because "that's what everyone does" which were some of the first answers I got. Thank you!!
