Courses Plus Student 569 PointsDomain registration - 5 years?!
I purchased a domain from Godaddy. Godaddy tried to get me to purchase 5 years in advance instead of just 1 year. Their logic... Google won't direct keyword traffic to a domain unless it's leased for at least 5 years. Google views longer lease terms on domain names with more integrity. Is this true? Does Google even know if I've purchased 5 years in advance? Or, more likely, is this just a ploy to get me to spend more $$?

Courses Plus Student 7,386 PointsI have never heard that before, but I certainly don't know everything, I would do some searches and find out. Remember Google is your best friend!!!
As for domain registration I got mine from Google and it was pretty cheap, of course they offered more than one but they let me choose the length.

5,536 Pointsive studied seo a fair bit and have heard similar before. I.e google giving more weight to domain names registered to 5 or more years. Your site will still get indexed with a domain registered for 1 year only though (i know this from experience). I think it could well be true but the fact is noone (except google of course) actually knows exactly how google decides what weight it gives domain and sites plus it is constantly changing as they update things. There is certainly a way for them to check as ive seen some seo site checkers check it in tests (and says it is good if your are 5 years or more) , so if they can google and other search engines can.
I have long term domains (10 year) for my major business site for this reason.

18,063 Pointsmichelle salsbury Yep! Google bots actually know the duration you've registered your domain for. Although domains names registered for 5 or more years are regarded more trusted, I hardly think it's a requirement to rank high in Google. SEO is more than just a domain registration time, but if you keenly consider it with other talked about determinants, you'll find it adds to the basket.
Here's a helpful guide from Google as far as SEO is concerned: Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide

15,479 PointsThis is really interesting: I've never heard that long term domains rank a little higher. I guess it makes sense. Finding the expiration of any domain is pretty simple and anyone can do it, just run a WHOIS search on the domain name. I'll have to start locking in my domains for longer lengths.
