Treehouse TeacherIt sounds like, though OS 10.5.8 is still officially supported for the latest version of the Android tools, they may soon move up support to 10.6+. It sounds like this is a common problem for people running the latest tools on Snow Leopard: https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/adt-dev/QxradSzgSYk
Can you possibly upgrade to 10.6? If not I'll see if I can find any other suggestions to try to get you up and running. I may even have an older version of the tools to send you...I'll look.

103 PointsThanks but I don't think I can upgrade.
Or is there some other IDE which is similar to Eclipse that I can use?
Ben Jakuben
Treehouse TeacherI'd recommend looking at IntelliJ, which some people swear by. If you have any trouble translating between our videos with Eclipse and IntelliJ just let me know. The last time I installed it it was pretty easy to set up for Android development.
You can also write code in whatever text editor or IDE you want and then run the Android tools from the command line. A little more cumbersome, but again, some people prefer that.
Also, I'll still take a look for an older version of Eclipse and tools that might work for you to at least get started.

103 PointsIf you could get an older version of Eclipse please do let me know. That'd be awesome
Thanks a ton for your help!

1,774 PointsDo think this is good to start http://confluence.jetbrains.com/display/IntelliJIDEA/Prerequisites+for+Android+development ?

Treehouse TeacherFor OSX 10.5.8, it looks like the only way to use Eclipse and the Android SDK is to configure it manually. It can be kind of a pain to set up, but I recorded a Quick Tip video that walks through it. Try following those instructions to set up your environment and let us know if it works or not. Good luck!

1,774 PointsHi thanks for the tips. I had different problems doing everything manually. I Couldn't launch the sdk manager.
Ben Jakuben
Treehouse TeacherDid you get any kind of error with the SDK Manager, or would it just not launch? You could also try running the SDK Manager from the command line:
- On Windows, double-click the SDK Manager.exe file at the root of the Android SDK directory.
- On Mac or Linux, open a terminal and navigate to the
tools/directory in the Android SDK, then executeandroid sdk.

1,774 PointsHi, SDK manager would not launch at all. I've tried eclipse 32 bits and 64 bits.

1,774 PointsThis process has been very difficult.

Treehouse TeacherWell, that should definitely help! Hope it goes much easier for you on that.

1,774 PointsThanks, I switched to learn how to build ios apps. Now, everything is working well on the mac pro. You guys rock!

Treehouse TeacherCool - that's a good solution! Good luck with iOS. Once you know one platform it's much easier to pick up the other.
