External Saves/Backups for Macs

I got a new MacBook Air over the weekend as my PC laptop was so wonderfully bricked by the cat and a wayward glass of water (yes, the cat is still alive). This is my first Mac, so there's a bit of a learning curve, but I can already tell I like it better than Windoze.

I have a Carbonite subscription, but realized, sadly, that I'd chosen the option that only backs up files, (though one would think the app would have been one of those "files", but it wasn't) and my Fun Facts app that I'd been building with the Android track for the last week was now gone.

I know Macs have Time Machine, and of course there's always external HDs and USB drives. And it LOOKS like I can upgrade Carbonite to save everything so I don't run into this problem again.

So Mac users, what do you save you files/programs to, just in case of computer failure?

We stick files on external solid state HD.

I'm a big fan of Backblaze and Crashplan!

Thank you all for your answers. taha I really appreciate the link to the article, I'll definitely be implementing some of these things in the near future. Jim thanks for the recommendations of Backblaze and Crashplan. I'm getting into new territory with Macs, and appreciate all the help I can get.
