Fatal Error in Workspaces of the Introduction to Git "Removing Files" video

When attempting to perform a git status, in the workspaces of the Introduction to Git "Removing Files" video, I receive the error below. Does anyone know how to fix this error? I tried relaunching the workspace several times, but the error still occurs.

Error Message fatal: Not a git repository (or any parent up to mount point /home/treehouse/workspace)
Stopping at filesystem boundary (GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set).

I figured out why the error was displaying. I needed to change directories to the medals directory. Once I changed the directory, I was able to enter the git status command and not receive an error.
