Feedback and Suggestion for TreeHouse

Hello All,

I have been using TreeHouse for around 7 days, I am currently using my free 14 day trail but will definitely be subscribing to the gold plan once it is up. I would first like to say that I believe TreeHouse is a wonderful MOOC and one of the best (if not THE BEST out there for the courses they offer).

I have been active ,on and off again, in online learning for a few years nows but heavily in the last few months. I started with Udemy but found that the quality of the information was outdated and the instructors struggled on the subjects they were teaching and after i reviewing Lynda and Treehouse i knew that the code and practices i was being taught was not only wrong but also just plain terrible.

However in my experiences there is 2 things all MOOCs and the online learning enviorment have in common, and it applies to thousands of people who choose this path.

-The first one is the " In one ear and out the other" effect. -The 2nd being that the reason most of us choose the online path is not only for finacial savings but also the freedom of self-pace learning.'

For those reasons, i have a put some thought into a solution to these 2 issues. If along with each video / section and or course/ track if Treehouse could implement a reiview and further practice section to go along with each section it would assit in the over all sucess rate of TreeHouse, online learning and MOOCs in general.

Don't get me wrong the code challenges and quizzes are amazing but for example:

During the week i am a father, full-time employee and husband. Sometimes there is just not enough energy or time in the day to try to complete some courses or study and when i do find time, alot of that time is spent in going back to re-watch videos just to refresh myself when if their was some type of review or practice work to put my mind back in the right frame without having to sit through 10 minute videos to remember one thing, then it would save time and help me as well as others continue to progress toward a better path and enrich our lives but it would also help the material stick and really sink in. Not to mention i would be willing to pay a little extra for this feature and it would also boost TreeHouse's rep.

Plus i find that when trying to watch the videos and follow along at the same time important pieces of information can sometimes get lost in the shuffle.

To conclude I really do feel like TreeHouse is a wonderful place and an excellent, cost effective learning institute and i look forward to growing myself using your excellent content and community.

Thanks!

Awesome. You could just listen to the audio of the video too or read video transcript.

One thing I've found very helpful when taking an online course (whether it be from Treehouse or some other provider) is to take notes. Typically, in each video there are only a couple important new concepts introduced and I just note them down - it seems like even the process of writing them down seems to cement them in my mind a bit better, plus, now I have notes I can skim back over instead of rewatching the video.

I use an application called CherryTree for taking notes (http://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/#downl) I'm sure there are alternatives, but it does what I need it to and doesn't get in my way.

I'm going through the Learn Ruby Track right now and have the website open on one side of my screen and workspaces and CherryTree open on the other side. As I watch the videos, I work along in workspaces, and take notes in CherryTree.

I do agree that suggested "assignments", for lack of a better word, are always extremely helpful. However, It's always possible to create your own extra-credit work by just asking yourself at the end of the course "what awesome thing can I do now that I couldn't do before the course" and dreaming up your own assignment to reinforce what you just learned. Working alongside the videos in workspaces, taking notes, and creating your own extra credit work can all help you get the most out of online learning.

I might almost argue that thinking up your own end of course assignment engages you more (than someone else thinking it up for you would) by forcing you to really think about what you just learned and how you could apply it in different situations.
