Footer color

I'm having the same problem a few other people had. I cant get the color of my footer to change, it is still showing up as a blue hyperlink. I've reviewed other's questions and answers but i'm either missing something or have a different problem. Here is my code so far, thanks in advance for any help: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title>Joseph Olsen | Photographer</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/normalize.css"> <style> footer { color: green; } </style> </head> <body> <header> <a href="index.html" <h1>Joseph Olsen</h1> <h2>Photographer</h2> </a> <nav> <ul> <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li> <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li> <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li> </ul> </nav> </header> <section> <ul> <li> <a href="img-numbers-01.jpg"> <img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt=""> <p>Experimentation with color and texture.</p> </a> </li> <li> <a href="img-numbers-02.jpg"> <img src="img/numbers-02.jpg" alt=""> <p>Playing with blending.</p> </a> </li> <li> <a href="img-numbers-06.jpg"> <img src="img/numbers-06.jpg" alt=""> <p>I just dunno.</p> </a> </li> <li> <a href="img-numbers-09.jpg"> <img src="img/numbers-09.jpg" alt=""> <p>Number nine.</p> </a> </li> <li> <a href="img-numbers-12.jpg"> <img src="img/numbers-12.jpg" alt=""> <p>The 12th.</p> </a> </li> </ul> </section> <footer> <a href="http://twitter.com/nickrp"><img src="img/twitter-wrap.png" alt="twitter logo"</a> <a href="http://facebook.com/nickpettit"><img src="img/facebook-wrap.png" alt="facebook logo"</a>

also:

<a href="index.html" <h1>Joseph Olsen</h1>

should probably be:

<a href="index.html"> <h1>Joseph Olsen</h1>

and

<img src="img/twitter-wrap.png" alt="twitter logo"</a>

should probably be:

<img src="img/twitter-wrap.png" alt="twitter logo"></a>

close image tag:

<img src="img/facebook-wrap.png" alt="facebook logo"

I think the problem is that the poorly formed html, means that the link doesn't close and the blue style of the anchor escapes its bounds.
