You have the correct thinking happening here. Reread the instructions more closely on the final question and make sure you're nesting your .footer under the correct area. (hint: a vs. > a).

thanks for the tip. i have adjusted it but its still not working . this is what i have now

p {

  a {
    color:red;
    .footer & {
      color:purple;
    }
  }
  >a{
    color:blue;
    &:hover {
    opacity: 0.5;
    }
  }

fixed code formatting

Hi Olubukola,

The challenge is looking for a little more specific of a selector. Not any element with a class of "footer" but a div with a class of "footer"

i copied this to my own text editor and it works there, the footer tag turns purple.

You're right, the code you're typing is completely valid... it's just the question itself is asking you to be more specific. As Jason mentioned in the other comment you'll want to specific that the footer is a class on a div item.

so i need to specifically add div to it . why?????????. thanks though for the guidance

I think part of that lesson is really just showing you examples of CSS's specificity even though technically it's valid without it.
