Freelance Web Design

I'm thinking about leaving my job in the non-IT world and would like to work for myself as a freelance web creator. I have been learning html and css for a month now and am looking for suggestions or ideas on the best way to continue my education to make a living working for myself in this field. Any input or advice would be appreciated

Depends on where your strengths lie. If you are better at coding, dive into the design stages here. If you are better at design, get stated with Ruby & PHP. At some point, you'll want to learn WordPress too. ;)

Check out the info in this article. It is priceless. 30 Days to Becoming a Freelancer

Also check out HOW A BLACKSMITH LEARNED TO CODE. It's a story about how this blacksmith learned to code and now makes $70,000 a year.

Ooh! That looks interesting. I'll have to check it out. I love reading stories like this. A current story making the rounds is about Leo Grand, a homeless guy, that learned how to code and recently released his first app. Homeless Coder Releases First App

Yeah, I remember seeing his name pop up on these forums. :)

That site you linked, about the blacksmith (Josh Kemp), is very motivational. So much so, I bought his book No Degree, No Problem!. If I could do anything all day, it would be to read about how people start with knowing nothing about coding to being hired or starting a business because of the newfound coding skills they have through sites like Treehouse or instructional books. It's an amazing time that we live in when you can basically start with nothing but a computer and internet access and become successful. I mean, think about it... anyone can go into a public library, access the public computers there, and train themselves to code. The sky is the limit! Technology is so awesome, nowadays!

Yeah, I am currently working through some personal problems (i.e. Clinical Depression) and learning to design and code, as well as learning French. I spend so much time on Treehouse, CodeSchool, Digital Photography School, TutsPlus and Duolingo. ;)

Clinical depression? I'm so sorry that you're struggling with that. I've known a few people that have struggled with it over the years, and it's not an easy path to walk. I wish you luck in getting it under control. Good luck with learning French, too!

Feh, c'est la vie. ;)
