front-end portfolio

I'm starting to get more comfortable with programming in javascript, html and css, that now i'm starting my portfolio. I am making a website that will have a photo and film gallery and have a tough time figuring out how that will be coded. I have found some code from github, such as this :https://github.com/blueimp/Gallery#html5-video-player, My question is that is it right to use other developers open-source code and customize it when building a portfolio?
