Full Stack Developer Guidance/advice

Hello Everyone!

I want to get a job in Web Dev / IOS Dev. I am currently taking the Full stack developer TRACK through tree house. It is going very slowly, but I am persistent. My ultimate goal is to learn as much as I possibly can so that I can get a great job in DEV. I have been self teaching my self since August. I have completed the JavaScript codecadamy but don't feel like I really learn anything.

I have also been researching boot camps to speed up my learning process. (Dev mountain {Provo,UT}, Coding Dojo {LA} , Iron Yard {Vegas} etc.) I don't have much money to take the course but could take out a loan if need be. I live in Las Vegas and boot camps are few and far between other then The Iron Yard, but I am willing to relocate if it means I will become successful.

1) Has anyone gone to these schools? Have any advice? Pro/Cons? Are they worth the money?

2) Has anyone done the treehouse full stack course that has landed a good job?

3) When do things start to "click" for me? I am finding it difficult to make a program from scratch, but I am able to understand previously written code decently.

I'm looking for some direction to get me on the right track because I don't have much time or money. Thank you in advance!

Hey Chuck,

First off, congrats on finding your passion in web development and pursing it. There are not that many people that commit themselves to doing anything and everything they can to turn dreams into realities but you are one of the few that are.

Now, on to your questions. I don't have any experience in boot camps, or the like, but I will answer questions 2 and 3. I'll start with question 3.

In my experience, things did not "click" after completing the JavaScript course at CodeCademy, or after completing the Full-Stack course here at Treehouse. It didn't click after reading numerous articles or watching countless YouTube videos. It wasn't until I started putting what I'd learn into actual use that the dots began to connect. I started retaining information when I didn't have a guide to follow and had to find ways to trouble shoot my problems. I learned far more in a short amount of time that way. That's when things "Clicked" for me.

As for getting a job, I completed many courses here at TreeHouse and landed my first internship after 5 months, my second internship after 8 months and now, a year later, I work as a full-time Front-End Web Developer at a local agency. My advice to you is just keep learning, creating and figure out what works for you and what doesn't. What worked for me, might not work for you and what works for you, might not work for me but its important that you find what helps YOU.

I hope this information helps you in some way and I wish you the best of luck on your journey.

Hey Chyno!

That is very inspirational! Thanks for taking time to explain it. It really does help to know what other people, like yourself, who are more advanced and involved in the industry went through. I can learn alot from those who have done what I am currently doing.

I will keep at it! And give it everything I got! Thanks again. Please keep in touch!

Glad i could inspire you. You're on the right path. Just be persistent and apply to any place you find interesting, even if you think you aren't qualified to do the work. It doesn't hurt to try and if you do get an interview you'll gain experience and learn what the process is like for when you are qualified.

I applied to many places, many didn't respond, few allowed me the opportunity to interview but I still kept applying and never let rejection put me down.

As long as you know, in your mind, that you'll get a job then nothing can stop you.

Good stuff! Thanks Chyno.
