Getting description from $collection->current(), rather than from $item itself

I am wondering why in list.php file you cannot simply get description from $item as $item->description, but rather get it through $content->shortDescription? If both methods are applicable, how and why would you choose one over the other? What are the benefits? Thanks a lot.
