The plugin's info page says "The most secure option is to use your own server’s SMTP (the details provided by your hosting provider). You get the best result when you use your own site’s SMTP details."
But I'm using MAMP and WordPress locally so what can I do?

I haven't done WordPress for quite some time, but if you are working only locally using MAMP, then there is no need to worry about whether it is secure or not. However, once you put the site live, then I would heed the warnings and use your hosting's SMTP services.
Hope that helps some. :)
