Handouts Instead of Transcripts?

I've taught college-level art classes (Jewelry/Metalsmithing- sadly, not a lot of openings for those) & it's a huge help for students to be able to refer to a handout that supports what's being taught in the class. I've been printing out the transcripts to use that way & as a handy place to make notes.

Could the transcripts for the videos be formatted more as a class handout & in file format that's generally recognizable (like PDF) rather than whatever an srt file is? I had to find a special reader in order to open & view them & they're still formated really strangely, not to mention inconsistently. In some cases, they're difficult to read as the subtitled is written as two lines but only one shows up on the screen, then when I print it, both lines show but are snipped just the tiniest bit at the top & bottom-- and that's only after I adjust the first two columns so they aren't taking up half the page with the line number & time tags. In others, the subtitle is one long line that cuts off on screen but, again, if I adjust the columns & then print landscape, I can read the whole thing. (I've been working both the Web Development & WordPress tracks. The Web Development transcripts follow the first description & the WordPress ones follow the second)

The handout could also include the instructor's notes, corrections to the videos, & possibly a copy of the code segments being typed on the screen, as the instructors tend to talk faster than I can type (& I'm not exactly slow on the keys)

Sharon, what i do is use notepad to take notes while watching the lesson.

The idea is making the transcripts something a bit more useful- or at least something more user-friendly- to students.

Taking notes isn't the issue (although personally, I prefer an actual notebook & pencil over notepad. 'Cause I'm all tactile like that). Plus, trying to take notes in Notepad whilst trying to watch the video and type code into Workspace or whatever I'm coding in? That's just too many things to try & fit onto a single laptop screen all at once. It's already crowded enough with having the video & Workspace open so I can see the code in the video I'm supposed to type into the Workspace.

As srt file is meant to provide subtitles for a video not to be read directly.

Ah, I see. That explains why they're so odd-looking.

Still, I would like to encourage the idea of having hand-outs to go with the classes, particularly the beginning levels. Some students do better with reading than listening, and some simply need an added boost to their memory. As they say in educational circles, the more senses are involved in learning something, the more likely it is to be retained. This is especially true of new skills & something I witnessed first-hand with my own students. (After all, not too many college kids walk into a beginning Metals class already knowing how to forge.)

This has been mentioned a few times. I think it's a good idea.

i also support this idea , infact i was looking for notes. Because if you forget something or want to quick review something you have to check whole video ... strong encourage of hand outs

I agree 100% !
