Have interesting task to set attribute "target" of all elements with class "external" to value "_blank".

Have interesting task to set attribute "target" of all elements with class "external" to value "_blank". Well, think it have to work: $("external").attr("target","_blank"); but that wonderful workshop thinks different, it says something like "Value of 'target' must be '_blank', not ''" . Completely do not understand where I could make mistake..
