General Discussion

Hello

I just joined. I'm a student of computer science in university but as we all know, Universities don't help much and it feels kinda of nothing there. So I decided to join here. How do you guys find treehouse? is it really as good as it shows in the ads or not ? cheers Hirad

It's absolutely that good :)

I have gotten through job interviews and hackathons on knowledge from here. Their weekly contests are a great way to stretch your skills outside the tutorials. It's a new feature I'm really enjoying. And I found that the tutorials were a great way to complement the bootcamp I was in.

It's better than other online code schools because everything is contextualized inside a project.

It's not like you're playing with Ruby strings and don't know why. You build an HTML site, then you add some style and JavaScript, then you start adding Ruby to do a specific thing.

I've found it really useful. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks mate. To be honest, I am really having a bad time right now. It has been more than 2 years (of my 3 years application) that I'm studying computer science in university. This Friday I have my mid-term exam of my last Java subject (Which i think is the most important part of my education) and believe it or not the exam is all about theory. Every Subject I have is theory, theory, theory and very basic programming. I took it for 2 years but I'm right at the edge. It feels so bad. I feel like I'm wasting my time and losing interest in programming. Desperately looking for a good community, school or something to get me back on track. This is so disappointing the way that University goes. I know it's not meant to be really advance but at least for the last java class they should do some non-basic programming. It's not just me though. I know my friends are the same. We are paying for university but all of us are all over the internet, YouTube, Google and other sources.

So I am really positive about treehouse

Glad to hear :) Yes - I've worked with recent CS grads in hackathons and their dev abilities are not very high. However, do not underestimate your CS degree! It's very difficult to get a dev job without it. Your degree will let you into back-end positions and a lot of analytics and data, as well as potentially architecting. Aside from that, your CS degree will instantly unlock a lot of things. Good luck with the tutorials.
