Without the rest of the code (or un-protected access to the image), it's hard to know just what you are seeing. But perhaps your container shape doesn't match the image aspect?

If you just wanted to be sure to see the entire image (and don't mind resizing) you could do this:

  background-size: contain; 
  background-position: center;
  background-repeat: no-repeat;

And you have some other options if you don't mind aspect distortion.
