14,584 PointsHeres problem with treehouse, it tricks you into thinking your working hard when you might not be. Add "code projects"
problem with treehouse is its soo easy to just sit on the couch and watch these videos all day, you see the points racking up and you feel like youve accomplished something. I take hella notes but i still dont retain much, and theres no projects or practice (repeating back one line of code in a "code challenge" is not practice), you have to take alot of initiative to go make your own projects after you finish a subject or you just forget everything and your points mean nothing.
Could treehouse add a bigger version of code challenge? you select a subject and then you get a random large project that you work on like in codecademy, then when your done you get points and a badge. I think this would be the future of code education

15,719 PointsHey Ian,
I see where you're going with this suggestion, and I quite like it. I love being handed projects to work on so that I can now what I'm doing wrong and what I'm doing right. But the way Treehouse works is not like Code Academy. In Code Academy, the projects are done gradually through interactive pieces of code. In Treehouse, it is done through instructors and your own initiative. I have suggested to quite a few people to take both at the same time because you'll get the best of both worlds. And besides, you have to have initiative to make it any kind of business.

12,193 PointsI agree with this too - I've thought on numerous occasions that it would be extremely helpful to have a sort of "workbook" on here with things to practice what you've learned. For example, it could have super buggy website examples that you need to fix, things to redesign, a mock-up client proposal ("Annie is a florist in North Carolina who needs a website. Here's a little bit about her business, beliefs, values, and ideas. Come up with this thing for her"), etc. Just a bunch of different exercises and projects of various difficulty or scope that you could work on to help practice and get a feel for doing things on your own (without totally being on your own.)
It's important to be creative and self-motivated enough to come up with your own project ideas to work on, and it will help you in the long run, but for those just starting out it can be super intimidating and slightly frustrating to try and figure out where and how to start on something, or even WHAT to start on.

I think the workbook idea is absolutely brilliant!
I was going to say that I agree, there definitely could be more "doing" components added to this site, before you're thrown into the total wild on your own. Staring at a black screen with a blinking cursor is a bit intimidating. That's one reason I like the workbook idea so much. It's not a total blank slate but it can present some real neat opportunities for independent analysis and problem solving.
