General Discussion

Hi all new here please be gentle

Hi all Just joined "Treehouse "with a plan to journey down the web designer adventure. It's something I have always fancied having a dabble at but until now haven't been able to find the time .

I am mid 40s in age , based in the UK and have spent my whole working life in heavy engineering .

I have no plans to start a new career in web design at the moment but who knows ... that could change if I ever get the hang of it.

Although i am useful around Auto-cad ,MS Office Photoshop and Lightroom I am completely new to web design ,HTML,CSS etc.

I am just working my way through the course as it is set out , but would appreciate any advice and tips from you guys that would help me along the way. Thanks in advance

Jim

The Treehouse tracks on Design are pretty good; don't worry, just keep working through them, check the loads of resources that the open source community has to offer as well. And when the going gets tough (it does), just keep pushing on, keep "googling", keep asking folks (on this forum and others).

Good luck, and have fun!!!

Vic

Welcome to Treehouse, though I am new here too, I hope you learn alot as I do, Good luck :)

I would recommend taking notes (especially during the HTML and CSS Foundations Deep Dives) as you go through the courses on Notepad or something. It helps me remember everything.

Jim:

I was a lifelong tradesman in the blue collar world. I was internet savvy, but I hadn't taken any computer classes since BASIC in middle school. Four years ago, I saw that I needed to not rely on companies or others for survival, and the way that I saw to take a hold of my own destiny was through web design and development. I built my first crude website a little over three and a half years ago...hideous looking thing, but I kept going. When I wasn't working 11 hour days at the factory, I was learning new things on blogs, books, videos, and most important...trying to build things. After building a string of websites for friends, family, and my own side projects, I've been making my living strictly from web design for the last year (come November). I can't say that it has always been sunshine and roses, but every month, I feel like the future is more in my hands than it ever would have been otherwise. I cannot imagine what life would have been like now had I not started down this path a few years ago. I'm set to turn 42 in a month, so never say never.

My advice: Learn as much as you can. Build on what you understand. Stay hungry.

Don't be overwhelmed. Bite sized chunks, and stay at it every day. Immerse yourself in learning, not just from here, but whatever sources you can find. Fill your mind with it.

BUILD THINGS. Even if they don't serve a purpose, build sites, because you will learn 10x as much from the process as you will from reading or hearing about it. Think of websites as any other thing, like a car or a machine, that can be broken down into it's parts and assembled.

Good luck to you , and stay focused on the long term. Your body can give out long before your mind ever will.

PEACE

A lot of life is just telling the Universe you're not taking "No" for an answer, if that makes any sense. You're going to do plenty good.

Thanks for that much appreciated.

My plan of action is to work through the HTML and CSS material and deep dives and also other sources on the web etc And then see if I can put it in to practice by building some basic sites, then take it from there.

Cheers

Jim

Jim, That's a great plan. That's all it takes to set things in motion. Keep us updated on any projects you have going on, and we'll definitely check them out.
