Hosting Companies

Does anyone know of any other good hosting companies besides Mediatemple, dreamhost or bluehost?

I've heard nothing but good things about Linode. WP Engine is good for WP sites. Heroku is great for Ruby/Python/Node.JS/Java apps.

I'm impressed with Linode.

I'm a fan of 1and1, but i guess a lot will depend on which type of account you are interested in.

I've been quite happy with HostGator, but the Treehouse team really rate Linode, so definitely worth a look.

Also, I understand that google also do some hosting, now even supporting WordPress... Not sure how great the support would be in such a large company, but in might be okay...

I also found a review site, but of course you would still need to find what best suites your needs.

A Small Orange great support for a good price

I'm a big fan of WPEngine -- of course that only works if you have switched over to WordPress completely.

I ended up with Godaddy, cheap and it works. If I wanted something more in my hosting though i'd be looking elsewhere rather than going for their more premium packages.

I recently moved my servers to Liquidweb and have been very happy with their product and support. One thing that baffles me about Hostgator is how they expected to be taken seriously when their website is straight outta 2000.

:+1: Liquid Web is probably one of the best there is. Some people don't like the price point, if them I recommend A Small Orange.

WPEngine has worked out really well for me so far. Been with Dreamhost for several years, but I have moved most of our Wordpress sites off Dreamhost to WPEngine and keep Dreamhost for smaller php sites and a Moodle site.

I have been with Dreamhost for almost 10 years and it's been a good investment. Never had many issues, customer support is great (at least for me), and I locked in a price so long ago that most other companies can't even compete.

HostGator is another one I've had for a long time as well. I have their basic package that I mostly use for development environments or to just test out projects. It's good, plenty of features and their rates aren't terrible.

Linode seems like a good enough company, but their costs are pretty high in my opinion. At that rate I can get a fully decked out build with AWS and manage everything myself and pay almost the same with FULL control.

Eddie Flores that AWS setup you mentioned sounds interesting. Do you have any links where I could read up on how to do this? Is it safe to assume that sites hosted on AWS have a pretty good overall performance? Would definitely appreciate it! Thanks!

There is some information here: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#functionality

AWS has SOOO much information and there is so many features that there really isn't a way to summarize and catalog everything without getting too technical. I started with AWS a long time ago, and have learned the hard way on how to do things, but I'm sure that there are tutorials and stuff that can teach you everything you need to have and do for whatever your circumstance may be. Again... it can get expensive, so make sure that you have a business model that generates enough $ to cover your overhead. Although it's one of the cheaper options for cloud computing out there.

Netflix, Pintrest, and other high-profile sites run their websites off of AWS, so it's pretty trustworthy in my opinion.

I'm in the UK and use unlimitedwebhosting. No contracts, no setup fees and no cancellation fees. I just pay a month at a time and can cancel at any time. If you are wanting a site just for the projects, you can create one and then drop it when you don't need it any more. You even get a free domain name.

I have cancelled a subscription in the past and it was no hassle at all Steve
